Background information on Bedgebury and the East England Forest District:

The Forestry Commission is part of the government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and is tasked with the sustainable management of the Public Forest Estate for timber, recreation and wildlife.

The East England Forest District (EEFD) is responsible for managing circa 35,000ha of Public Forest Estate land from Norfolk to East Sussex, including Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest.

Bedgebury is home to the National Conifer Collection which is managed for a range of purposes, such as: to support the conservation of conifers; to improve people’s understanding of trees and the environment; to be a research site for the trial of future forestry species; and to provide opportunities for outdoor recreation.

The current Bedgebury learning service consists of: FC-led sessions for schools and families which focus on our specialisation (the conifer collection); an external learning partner (Kent High Weald Partnership) which delivers teambuilding and forest schools; and self-led learning opportunities including Ranger In A Bag backpacks for schools and seasonal trails. This is in line with the National Learning Strategy for FC England 2017-2022.
