United Environmental Services Ltd (UES) was set up by Managing Director Toby Hart in 2007. The company has since grown and now works on a range of projects in the construction, rail, utilities and public sectors, operating throughout the UK. Our client base includes developers, planners, architects, engineers, homeowners and local planning authorities, mostly as a result of repeat business and recommendations.

UES carries out a variety of protected species and habitat survey work including surveys for bats, great crested newts and preliminary ecological appraisals (PEAs). In addition, we also prepare documents to support planning applications, such as habitat management plans, method statements, design strategies and ecological impact assessments.

UES is looking for passionate and hard-working Consultant Ecologists and a Senior Ecologist to join a small but growing ecological consultancy. 

The Role

This exciting opportunity will require the successful candidate to:

  • Work closely with colleagues, clients, Local Authorities and statutory consultees to achieve positive planning outcomes, whilst ensuring that potential impacts on wildlife and habitats are appropriately mitigated and compensated for
  • Carry out and lead a range of survey work, include bat surveys and great crested newt surveys
  • Design and implement mitigation strategies
  • Manage their own projects to provide a comprehensive and high-quality service to our clients
  • Carry out analysis of data recorded during survey work
  • Write a range of reports and documents to inform the planning process
  • Train and mentor junior members of the team (Senior Ecologist)

Person Specification

The following attributes are considered essential for the roles:

  • Previous relevant experience in a similar role 
  • Member of CIEEM (Associate level or higher, or have the eligibility if not currently held)
  • Bat and great crested newt class licences (Level 2, both required for Senior Ecologist role, one required for Consultant Ecologist role) 
  • Good botanical identification skills or the motivation and enthusiasm to acquire them
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problems solving skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Leadership and team building skills (Senior Ecologist)
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Full driving licence and own method of transport

The following attributes are considered desirable for the roles:

  • A degree in ecology or a similar field
  • Post-graduate qualifications
  • Qualified tree climber
  • Valid CSCS card holder
  • GIS skills
  • Marketing and tendering experience (Senior Ecologist)
