Do you have a keen interest in the environment, conservation grazing and heritage of the local area? Do you enjoy being outdoors and have a passion to enthuse and educate local communities?

If so the Borough of Poole is delighted to be able to offer the opportunity to become a Heathland Mitigation and Grazing Warden. You will be involved in strategic access management, helping to mitigate the effects of urban pressures on our heathland reserves.

Environmental Services manage some of the most important heathland in Dorset, which is home to rare and endangered wildlife. Part of the role will involve (daily) welfare checks and occasional handling of livestock, as part of Poole’s Conservation Grazing programme.

You will preferably have working experience of Lowland Heaths and their management, knowledge of cattle and horse welfare. You must have excellent communication skills enabling you to effectively protect and improve the condition of these premier sites.

You will provide access management, advice and information to site visitors across Poole’s Heathland. Much of this will be through a year-round onsite presence promoting responsible use, awareness and enjoyment of the natural environment through engagement with site users. You will also communicate through other channels, including social media and be involved in organizing and delivering events and activities to a range of audiences.

You will also have the ability to carry out minor repairs & maintenance on site as required. The role will also involve working and engaging volunteers; with a strong focus on undertaking practical conservation tasks.

You will be part of the Streetscene team based at Hatchpond Depot delivering cover 7 days per week on a rota basis. As such, you will need to be flexible, comfortable with working on your own and have a full driving license.

This role is both demanding and rewarding and offers an excellent opportunity to be part of a dynamic and responsive team striving to meet the Streetscene purpose - to ensure that the public spaces of Poole are safe, clean, protected, attractive and easy to use.

For an informal discussion about this role please contact Terry Elborn on 01202 261364.
