Communications Officer

The National Marine Aquarium

The National Marine Aquarium is a marine conservation charity with a mission to connect us with our oceans.

We’re committed to conserving the marine environment and inspiring others to do the same. Our oceans are vital for all life on earth, but are facing unprecedent pressures from wide scale human activity. But we can make a difference by helping people to discover how amazing our oceans are and how they can take small actions to help protect them.

The Communications Officer Role
We are looking to recruit a Communications Officer to help us progress our ocean optimistic communication brand and work with our marine experts to create compelling stories for a wide variety of national and international audiences.

The overall purpose of this role is to support the NMA mission of ‘connecting us with our oceans’. The successful candidate will report into the Head of Conservation Education & Communication and Marketing and will work alongside a small team of scientists, marketers, educators and communicators to plan, deliver and evaluate a range of campaigns and other communications designed to:

  • Increase understanding of NMA’s conservation work
  • Drive positive pro-ocean behaviour in a range of audiences.
  • Support fundraising and commercial activity.

It is anticipated that there will be anti-social working hours including evening and weekend work as part of this role.

Who are we looking for?

Our ideal candidate would be a skilled and confident writer, with the ability to tell compelling stories about the NMA and the oceans. You will have professional experience of using social media and the social media community. You should be skilled at adapting a message to different audiences. As such you would need to show proven knowledge and expertise on multimedia communications and editorial as well as a working understanding of the media and GDPR.

We would expect the candidate to have excellent, English language and IT skills and a degree (or equivalent) in Media Studies, Marketing, PR, English or other appropriate discipline. A degree in a biological science would also be considered commensurate with experience.

You will thrive as part of a dynamic team as we are looking for a strong team player, who will actively engage in NMA life in order to create content for communications and marketing material.

We would also look for somebody with an interest and fascination with the oceans, who is familiar with a range of marine conservation issues. We’d also be pleased to if the candidate was aware of some of the progressive techniques used to engender behaviour change in an audience.
