Job Overview

An exciting opportunity to assist with the management of Barnes Common, a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI).

You will be employed by the Friends of Barnes Common (FoBC) which is a charitable company, limited by guarantee, that undertakes 3rd sector management of Barnes Common in partnership with Richmond Council (LBRuT). FoBC was awarded Gold in 2018 and the Best Common award in the 2017 London in Bloom competition.

The position will encompass a wide range of tasks and activities and is an opportunity to get on the first rung of the ladder with regards to a career in conservation.

Job Duties

  • To help manage, preserve and enhance the Common as a local nature reserve and open space - this includes the management of its principal habitat, acid grassland, but also meadow, woodland, riverine and pond habitats.
  • Annual work on the Common includes, mowing and grass cutting, strimming, tree and scrub clearance, coppicing, some tree planting, hay baling, wood chipping, post/barrier installation and footpath maintenance.
  • To assist the Manager with FoBC’s conservation work parties for volunteers. These are held every Wednesday and on one Sunday each month.
  • Undertake regular patrols to ensure that the Common is a safe and welcome place for the public to use.
  • To ensure the Common remains tidy and free from litter and graffiti. This includes using a gator to help with the twice weekly bin run
  • There may also be some work assisting the charity’s Community / Outdoor Learning officer, for instance, helping with school visits.

Job Requirements

  • Have the ability to enthusiastically and effectively communicate with people at all levels, including members of the public, volunteers, school children, students, council officers, contractors and dog walkers.
  • A team worker but able to work autonomously with good organisational and forward planning skills who is used to working outdoors and physically fit.
  • A basic understanding of ecology along with some practical conservation and habitat management skills would be useful but are not essential.
  • Experience of using power tools would be useful but is not essential - for the right candidate FoBC may be able to help with training costs.
  • Up to date emergency first aid certificates would be useful but not essential – FoBC would support training for this
  • Either living or be prepared to live within 30 minutes of Barnes Common and possess a clean driving license.
  • Will be required to give two referees and have a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Job Terms and Conditions

Contract: This employment will be initially contracted to 30th November 2021.

Salary: £12-15 per hour.

Hours: Two days a week (15 hours) which would include some weekend work e.g. monthly Sunday work party

Reporting to: The Manager for the Friends of Barnes Common.

Probationary Period: There will be a probationary period of two months.

Notice Period: Four weeks for both employer and employee.

Pension: A basic ‘defined contribution’ pension complying with the government pension legislation.

Holiday: Eight days holiday per annum – (four weeks / 20 days pro-rated)
