The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. We want to see a UK rich in native woods and trees, for people and wildlife. The Trust aims to engage and inspire people about woods and trees to help us meet our vision of creating, restoring and protecting woodland. We own and care for over 1,000 woodland sites across the United Kingdom and support the creation and management of woodland on others’ land.

Smithills Estates is a rich upland landscape of grassland, moorland and woodland habitats which has been neglected; reducing biodiversity and leaving wildlife vulnerable. We’ve got big plans to restore Smithills and use it as an example of how all our uplands can be saved and transformed. We’re looking for an Estate Ranger to help assist us in this vision.

The Estate Ranger will be responsible for undertaking agreed daily, weekly and monthly maintenance programmes, ensuring that the cleanliness and general physical appearance of the Smithills Estate is presented to the highest possible standards. You will manage volunteers on practical tasks in our woodlands and lead volunteer task days to engage the community in our work at the Smithills Estate. You will contribute to and implement engagement activities included in the Smithills Estate Heritage Lottery Funded (HLF) Activity Plan, the Smithills Estate Woodland Management Plan and WT corporate aims and objectives as outlined in its Strategic Plan.

Ideally you will have previous experience in land-based management in the conservation or forestry sector and be proficient in practical land management skills, such as fencing, tree work, planting and hedging operations and have experience of managing budgets. In addition you’ll be used to managing public events, guided walks, volunteer activities and community engagement events. You will need to be positive and results focussed; determined to seek positive outcomes from challenging situations. You’ll be able to work and communicate with others effectively, be commercially astute and flexible to changing demands. A full driving licence, preferably inclusive of a classification for driving with a trailer is required.

There’s no other organisation like the Woodland Trust. Whatever you do here you will be supporting our work to protect and enhance woods and trees. In return we recognise and value our people. You'll have our full support, training and opportunities for professional development, along with a contributory pension, life assurance and good holiday entitlement.
