The Westcountry Rivers Trust is an environmental charity that works across the South West to improve our rivers for the benefit of all. We work with EU grants, Water Company funded initiatives and government funding to deliver change both in our rivers and on the land that they drain.

As Communications & Marketing Officer at Westcountry Rivers Trust, your role will be to shake-up our current communications activities and produce exciting new communications that will support the Trust to continue to grow and win funds, post-Brexit. You will have excellent copywriting skills and experience across integrated marketing campaigns, with the ability to monitor and manage a wide variety of stakeholders.


  • To work as part of the WRT team to successfully communicate the ideas, work and themes of the Trust’s work to a wide variety of audiences such as South West Water, DEFRA, local councils, community groups, angling groups, Universities, funders, farmers & other NGO’s.
  • To proactively explore opportunities for appropriate marketing activity (digital and hard) and establish effective links to raise the profile of the organisation both regionally & nationally
  • To explore potential new platforms for the charity to engage in and from
  • Ensure the communications requirements of Trust projects are met in line with activities detailed in bids & tenders
  • Design, plan, update and continue to develop the communications strategy in line with the Trust’s overall strategy
  • Attend partner communications meetings for Trust projects including various EU project comms groups (some international travel within Europe may be required)
  • To contribute ideas and help identify relevant tools and tactics to deploy as necessary to enhance communications (cases studies, celebrity, articles, quotes, memes, posts and comments)
  • Promote the work of the Trust and increase awareness of project activities through press releases, newsletters, blogs, films and social media, producing content in-house & working with external suppliers where necessary
  • Design, plan, update and continue to develop all relevant Trust websites
  • Manage the development and maintenance of social media channels ensuring the Trust stays ahead of emerging trends
  • Identify media opportunities (radio, TV, local events etc) to promote and raise awareness of the Trust, as well as respond to incoming media enquiries
  • To produce in-house a range of publications & marketing materials for both print & web, including Confluence (our annual report), project reports, leaflets and brochures using desktop publishing software
  • Maintain communications with audiences and other organisations such as citizen science volunteers, providing support when needed, as well as marketing and communication support for educational & participation activities
  • Undertake administration, including managing calendars for events and workshops
  • Assist in organising events including planning, finding venues, sending invitations, and attending events to help ensure they run smoothly, as well as preparing marketing materials for promotion of events
  • Ensure there is effective communications internally to all Trust staff
  • To build effective networks with colleagues and provide advice and expertise to staff regarding their public profile
  • Liaise with external suppliers of communications and marketing services, as required e.g. photographers, film makers, publishers, designers etc.
  • To monitor, evaluate and report on all communications & marketing activity including compilation & analysis of audience data results across all media channels
  • Assist with the collation of information required to make funding applications and claims

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • An appropriate qualification in marketing & communications or other relevant field and/or at least 3 years’ experience in a comms & marketing role
  • A proven track record of successful marketing campaigns
  • Ability to develop & maintain good working relations with internal staff & external stakeholders
  • Excellent written & verbal communication & presentation skills with good attention to detail
  • Knowledge & competence in Microsoft Office applications, desk-top publishing and website management

Due to the nature of this role and the location of the Westcountry Rivers Trust office, it is essential that the successful applicant has a valid driving licence and a means of transportation.
