Thameswey is a leading energy and environmental services company wholly owned by Woking Borough Council. Thameswey Sustainable Communities Ltd. is part of the Thameswey Group, specialising in low carbon energy generation, consultancy and support services, affordable housing, sustainable house building and property development.

One of our key projects is Action Surrey, a programme designed to help residents and organisations within the county to reduce their energy consumption and costs. Over the past four years, and with a small team, Action Surrey has been able to make over 2,500 energy saving improvements to Surrey home including insulation, heating systems, and solar technology, as well as helping a number of local charities and businesses reduce their carbon footprint and costs.

The Role

Working within the Environmental Projects team, the Environmental Projects Assistant is required to provide energy efficiency, environmental and sustainability advice services for private residents and organisations, and to support the Environmental Projects team in the planning, co-ordination and delivery of specific projects as required.

The scope and nature of these initiatives, and the design and implementation of projects to deliver these initiatives, will be defined within the Thameswey Sustainable Communities Ltd Business Plan.

Reports to: Environmental Projects Manager

Areas of responsibility

1) Assisting in the planning, design and delivery of projects promoting carbon reduction measures, energy efficiency, biodiversity, sustainability and reducing fuel poverty to households, businesses and community organisations across Woking Borough, Surrey and beyond; and 

2) assisting in the co-ordination of marketing activities to ensure customers, partners and other stakeholders are aware of the services provided by Thameswey.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Providing guidance and advice to customers through a range of media (e.g. telephone and face-to-face advice, responding to enquiries from the website, producing advice materials digitally and in print etc)
  2. Ensuring customer contact and project databases are regularly updated to ensure accurate information is maintained
  3. Delivering marketing campaigns effectively, liaising with web and graphic designers to generate high quality material to promote projects and attract enquiries
  4. Identifying, procuring and co-ordinating partners and contractors to implement specific project deliverables
  5. Handling project budgets and financial activity including invoices, awarding small grants, and monitoring expenditure
  6. Collating data and information for reporting on project proposals, progress and outcomes to local authority partners and other stakeholders
  7. Meeting with and presenting information to various stakeholders including Local Authorities, charities, businesses and residents
  8. Arranging and attending events to promote relevant projects, and network with potential partners

Principal Terms and Conditions

The position of Environmental Projects Assistant is a full time post (37.5 hours per week) based at our offices in Woking. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

The Person

Education and Training


  • Educated to degree level or at least two years experience of working in a related field


  • Energy, environmental or sustainability related qualifications



  • Customer service experience, either face to face or via telephone
  • Experience in office administration


  • Experience of the energy efficiency/ sustainability industry, including knowledge of national government policies, funding mechanisms and relevant technology
  • Preparation and execution of marketing activity



  • Good knowledge and understanding of Excel and databases and how to draw conclusions from data
  • Excellent communicator, able to present to groups of senior management/ councillors/ officers
  • Strong English writing skills


  • Ability to produce simple graphic designs for posters, leaflets and digital advertising
  • Ability to analyse and draw useful conclusions from large amounts of data
