Propagation Place is St Werburghs City Farm’s pioneering new community business, which has been funded by Power to Change to grow a community propagation business that improves volunteer health and well-being, and re-invests in green space through sales of vegetable and herb seedlings. The Propagation Place Business Manager will be responsible for successfully launching this exciting, volunteer-led enterprise, in particular :

  • generating £75k of sales through digital marketing and other avenues by the end of the 2020 growing season
  • overseeing financial and project management, including line supervision of project staff
  • launching and managing an eCommerce website
  • developing and embedding efficient systems
  • developing project targets and milestones, to be set within the first 3 months in post

St Werburghs City Farm is an inner-city oasis. Situated in the Bristol ward of Ashley next to 4 other wards which fall within the 10% most disadvantaged in the UK, the Farm has developed to meet local needs. Our vision is to inspire and educate happy, healthy communities through green spaces, local food and each other. Using a 2 acre small holding, a 1 acre community garden, a 2.5 acre conservation site and 13 acres of community allotments, our mission is to offer targeted community services that equip people with knowledge, skills and confidence, and provide green sites accessible to all. Our aims are to: increase people's knowledge of where food comes from and access to locally produced food; enhance people's health and well-being through greater access to green spaces; and improve the capacity, confidence and cohesion of our community. 

Key Responsibilities

Website and sales

  • Lead on establishment of a successful brand, including content creation for our new website and social media platforms
  • Lead on the development and implementation of digital and print marketing strategies
  • Oversee website stock and order management
  • Maintain excellent customer service and communication
  • Identify and develop new markets, including schools and community groups

Project Management

  • Maintain excellent financial management, adjusting budgets monthly to ensure the project remains financially on track
  • Recruitment and line management of a Volunteer Officer and two Seasonal Workers
  • Research and development of efficient systems, including bespoke packaging to increase speed and efficiency of picking/packing
  • Establishing and maintaining relationship with the post office/courier service, ensuring efficiency of delivery and best value for money
  • Participate in preparation, compilation and submission of funding applications (and or income generation initiatives) to secure continuation funding for the Project
  • Lead on development of educational programme of courses and workshops, online courses and key-staged, downloadable activity sheets for schools
  • Prepare annual reports, project plans and regular reports to trustees/funders/stakeholders as requested
  • Take responsibility for Health and Safety issues relating to project activities as appropriate including the preparation of activity site checks, risk assessments and safe tool use
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partner organisations, stakeholders, visitors and other people relevant to the role
  • Introduce and manage a range of income generating activities to support project sustainability
  • Support project staff to compile qualitative and quantitative data to demonstrate the impact of the project
