What you'll be doing

You will be joining a staff of thirty covering all areas of the UK, with a direct focus on delivering our aquatic ecological and fisheries monitoring projects. Each of the team members has skills and specialities which allow for a vast range of knowledge and experience sharing.

We are looking to recruit a Fisheries Ecologist / Senior Fisheries Ecologist to carry out survey design & planning, field work, data analysis and reporting. There will also be opportunities for business development and contract management. We carry out pre-and post aquatic monitoring for many of our restoration schemes, as well as providing data collection and consultancy services for a range of clients across the UK. Reporting to our Principal Ecologist you will be responsible for mentoring junior staff and developing new work streams.

Who we’re looking for

  • Experienced fisheries ecologist / senior fisheries ecologist
  • A good leader and communicator
  • A hard working with an attention for detail, ensuring all data collected is of the highest standards


  • Ability to interact professionally with clients and stakeholders
  • BSc in Fisheries, Ecology or related environmental / biological discipline
  • An in depth knowledge of freshwater fisheries, legislation and survey techniques
  • Experience in leading surveys and species identification (e.g. electric fishing, netting, hydro-acoustics, eDNA, habitat assessments)
  • Experience in data analysis and technical reporting
  • Great I.T. skills
  • Full clean UK driving licence
  • Comfortable working in or around water

Desirable skills

  • Wider aquatic ecology experience (macroinvertebrate, macrophyte, RHS, RCS)
  • Aquatic / Riparian protected species experience / licenses
  • Experience of water quality sampling
  • Valid CSCS card
  • Professional membership (MIFM, MCIEEM or similar)

The package

The position has a starting salary of £22,000 - £31,000 dependent on experience, which will be reviewed on an annual basis. You will receive twenty days holiday, plus public bank holidays, with an additional day of leave accrued per year of service. The role will require periods of working away from home, for which you will receive a staying away allowance. You will have an annual training budget of £500, exclusive of any initial training agreed. For the right candidate, there will be career progression depending on aspirations and suitability.
