Overall Job Purpose:

The Technician & Education Support Officer will be responsible for the overall maintenance, cleaning and preparation of equipment used by visiting groups and assisting with the day-to-day supervision of volunteers, research placements and work experience students. They will also be responsible for carrying out routine safety checks on the equipment and record keeping. The role will also have an important part to play as the first point of contact and ongoing daily support for the many groups who teach their own courses at FSC Millport. They will also support the work the FSC does within its public aquarium, supporting groups and members of the public using the facilities and with the maintenance of the attraction.

This is essentially an active role and will require the postholder to be able to undertake manual handling duties associated with the post, e.g. moving/carrying equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that the field equipment and workroom apparatus (such as microscopes) are maintained, prepared and made ready for use by visiting groups
  • Ensuring work rooms and other teaching spaces are kept clean, maintained, prepared and made ready for visiting groups
  • Liaising with and supporting visiting university, secondary and primary groups on a daily basis to ensure we are best able to meet their needs
  • Managing equipment stores, including working within agreed budgets to maintain appropriate stock levels, and ensuring appropriate routine checks are carried out on any scientific and field equipment
  • Supporting visiting staff and students by demonstrating equipment use and techniques, as required
  • Proactively identifying and carrying out work before issues arise, as well as working with all staff to respond to requests as they arise and assisting with practical tasks as required
  • Ensure that the teaching and public education spaces are kept clean and tidy
  • Ensuring rooms are set up with appropriate furniture and equipment as required by different customers
  • Maintaining the buildings and grounds litter free and overseeing disposal of waste, recycling and composting
  • Providing support and guidance to visiting research placements, work experience students, volunteers and higher education student placements
  • Assisting with the day to day supervision of volunteers and work experience students within the grounds and buildings, to include setting rotas and allocating tasks, and ensuring that these tasks have been completed effectively
  • Supporting the work of the Boat Crew as required
  • Ensuring that computers are available for use by visiting groups, providing basic ICT support
  • Supporting activities in the aquarium and nearby environment


  • Complying with all relevant legislation / FSC Operating Codes of Practice (OCoPs) / FSC Health and Safety Handbook and FSC procedures
  • Taking an active role in the learning location’s evening, overnight and on call duties - this will involve staying on site on some evenings, overnight or to be contactable by phone to deal with customer issues and, with the support of a Senior member of staff, respond to emergencies
  • Delivering a high standard of customer service and customer care
  • Ensuring the highest standards of quality are achieved in all duties carried out
  • Working closely with other staff to ensure that appropriate levels of service are maintained during absences and periods of high workload
  • Maintaining professional standards at all times in accordance with FSC policies
  • Fulfilling your obligations under FSC’s Behaviour Partnership to ensure a happy, productive working environment
  • Attending staff meetings as well as FSC internal and external training as required, in order to share best practice and improve team and learning location performance, and participating fully in staff development activities (sometimes this may involve travel to other learning locations with the occasional overnight stay)
  • Driving: We have a number of vehicles which you will be asked to drive. To do so, you will need to be 21 years or over, have a full valid driving licence, to have been driving for at least two years, and undertake an internal assessment on commencement in the role
  • Undertaking any other duties that may reasonably be required to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the learning location
