Post Title: Farm Advisor - Teme Catchment
Responsible To: Head of Land Management
Part- Time: 22 hours per week
Duration: 30 months until 31st March 2021 (potential for extension subject to funding)
Salary: £24,000 per annum, Plus Pension
Location: Based at Severn Rivers Trust office in Martley, Worcestershire, WR6 6QF

Job Purpose

This post is suitable for an experienced and enthusiastic farm advisor to work on behalf of Severn Rivers Trust and deliver a programme of works funded by Defra aimed at reducing flooding and improving soil health through Natural Flood Management.

Engagement with farmers and local communities in a target area of the Brimfield Brook catchment will seek to create through a voluntary approach, a sense of ownership and achievement within the communities in relation to flooding in the area.

Main Responsibilities

  • Engage with farmers and landowners within the Brimfield Brook, informing them about the project and encouraging them to get involved.
  • Provide farmers and landowners with site specific advice on how they can alter their land and soil management practices to help reduce flood risk and achieve NFM principles.
  • Provide guidance and support to participating land owners and farmers.
  • Maintain detailed records of landowner engagement, advice given and practices adopted.
  • Conduct demonstrations and education sessions which teach participating landowners and farmer how to carry out soil testing.
  • Using the NFM opportunity maps for guidance, produce site specific plans detailing possible NFM features that could be built on the land
  • Discuss the possible opportunities with the landowner and obtain consent from the landowner to build the NFM features.
  • Help/work with the landowner to apply for and obtain the ‘NFM Construction Grant’, including assistance with gathering quotes for construction
  • Provide guidance on how to build NFM features, helping pass on the knowledge to the community and local contractors
  • Report monitoring programme’s progress to the Steering Group - Quarterly
  • Provide Herefordshire Council’s NFM Project Officer with regular updates on monitoring programme’s progress.
  • Produce an analytical report assessing the impacts NFM measures have had on soil infiltration rates.
  • Organise community events which help educate and engage communities in NFM principles.
  • Conduct learning events which teach communities about NFM, helping them take ownership of NFM measures within their catchment.
  • Collate the gathered information and share this data with Herefordshire Council. Participate in relevant Severn Rivers Trust water environment initiatives, programmes and projects during the period of the contract, in particular creating a number of local volunteer groups.
  • Participate in relevant partner activities where these are complimentary to the core programme, assist in the development of water environment focussed projects in target areas.
  • Promote joined up thinking in the catchment through effective communication with other delivery officers, including Environment Agency.
  • Carry out all duties and responsibilities with reasonable care for the health and safety of oneself and any other persons and co-operate fully with the Severn Rivers Trust in health and safety matters.
  • Some of this work may be required to be performed out of normal office hours.

Essential Knowledge and Experience

  • In depth knowledge and understanding of soil health and management;
  • Degree or equivalent qualification, or 3 years’ experience in land management;
  • Knowledge of agriculture;
  • Previous experience in delivering conservation projects in an agricultural setting;
  • Experience of environmental legislation relating to the farmed environment;
  • A thorough understanding of agricultural systems and the agricultural calendar;
  • Experience of delivering projects on time, to budget and in line with agreed outputs and outcomes;
  • Computer literate in all basic software packages;
  • Must have a full driving licence and use of a vehicle for work;
  • Experience in producing and using Risk Assessments and Lone working procedures.

Desirable Experience & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of undertaking Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship Agreements;
  • Agricultural business management and planning;
  • FACTS and BASIS Soil and Water qualifications;
  • Experience of advising upon Countryside Stewardship applications;
  • Understanding and experience of using GIS, geodatabases to record and interrogate outputs.

Skills

  • Excellent communicator with proven track record in developing strong working relationships with farmers, landowners and other stakeholders;
  • Ability to provide clear, concise written material in a variety of formats for a variety of audiences;
  • Strong at diplomacy and negotiation;
  • Excellent time management and the ability to prioritise a varied workload;
  • An ability to work with minimal supervision.

Selection and Assessment

Probationary Period

The Severn Rivers Trust operates a probationary period for all employees joining the Trust, which is in place to see whether you are able to meet the standards of the job. This will be a period of 3 months.

Salary

Your initial salary will be based on your skills, knowledge and experience, and progression will be based on your performance. You will be paid monthly in arrears by credit transfer to a bank or building society account.

Hours of Work

This is a part-time post of 22 hours per week.

Holiday Entitlement

Our holiday year runs from January to December. Part-time employees get 28 days holiday per year (pro rata) plus bank holidays.

Pension

You will be automatically enrolled in the Severn Rivers Trust Stakeholder Pension Scheme, though you may opt out. The employee contributes 4% and the Trust contribute 6% (increasing to 7% in January 2019).

Notice

If you choose to leave the Trust you will be required to give three months’ notice once your probationary period is complete.
