Nature Conservation Manager


The Environment Trust (the Trust) is a well-established nature and heritage conservation charity that has been operating for over 30 years. We educate, empower and mobilise people to improve, preserve and protect their neighbourhood for the benefit of nature and people everywhere


Based at Environment Trust office at ETNA, 13 Rosslyn Road, TW1 2AR with visits to various locations in South West London. Home working is available on a limited basis.

Hours and remuneration

The role is initially part time working 28 hours per week but extending to a full time role when further funds are secured. The salary reflects the work required within our current projects, however, our intention is that an increased salary will be available with higher level management responsibilities.

The role holder will be required to work additional hours as reasonably required to meet the demands of work flow. Weekend, Bank Holiday or evening work, will be necessary to attend events or meetings as necessary.

The salary would be £27,358 per annum pro rata.

Purpose Of The Role

The post holder’s primary objective is the identification, instigation and delivery of a range of projects focused on engaging and educating local communities in the conservation of green spaces within South West London. They will be part of the Management Team and so need to be fully invested in the progression of the Trust in its entirety.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Be part of the Management Team developing the Trust’s reputation, influence, presence and activities to secure the future of the Trust
  2. Develop a conservation strategy and work with the CEO to develop a related business plan
  3. Network and build relationships with funders, local authorities, local grass root environmental organisations, conservation bodies, centres of education, green public service providers, local interest and community groups, and potential partners.
  4. Support grant writer to secure funding
  5. Deliver the outcomes of funded projects and agreed KPIs. Produce regular reports for funders and for the Trust to present to staff and Trustees at the Operation meetings.
  6. Line manage conservation staff working on projects
  7. Recruit, develop and manage volunteers according to our Volunteer policy
  8. Educate all sectors of the local community including local schools, colleges, uniformed youth groups, young people, young people and adults with mental health issues and other hard to reach groups, about the value of biodiversity and their role in its improvement and conservation.
  9. Organise, run and administer the Trust’s successful Duke of Edinburgh programme.
  10. Working with the Business Development Manager, promote, organise and run Corporate Volunteering days
  11. Fulfil all administrative tasks required for the role accurately and efficiently

Person Specifications

Experience & qualifications

  1. A degree or equivalent in a relevant conservation/ecology discipline
  2. At least two years' experience of conservation project management working with the local community, engaging and managing staff and volunteers.


  1. proven creative self-starter with evidence of capacity for strategic thinking
  2. familiarity with funding structures and experience of bid writing to support grant writer
  3. proven ability to identify, develop, fund and manage a range of projects with evidence of achievement of objectives
  4. strong leadership skills and experience of recruiting, managing and up-skilling staff and volunteers
  5. demonstrable ability to network effectively with local authorities, landowners and other organisations for successful project delivery
  6. evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills including and an ability to negotiate, influence and adapt communication styles to a variety of circumstances.
  7. experience in preparing individual activities by visiting sites, writing risk assessments, identifying required equipment, resources, facilities, identifying required training and planning educational content.
  8. ability to identify and fulfil responsibilities for the health, safety and welfare of volunteers and staff.
  9. skills in promoting events and activities both locally and through blogs and the use of social media, namely Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
  10. experience of working with schools, colleges, universities and youth groups to increase uptake of volunteering among children and young people
  11. strong administrative skills with attention to detail to ensure: volunteer records are up to date, budgets are accurate, DofE records are complete, DBS checks for volunteers helpers are valid, time sheets and expense forms are completed and all data stored is GDPR compliant
  12. adaptable to change and additional demands that may be required by the CEO

Other requirements

  1. a full clean driving license and use of own car (expenses paid)
  2. hold a current First Aid At Work qualification (will be provided/updated as necessary)
  3. hold a satisfactory DBS enhanced disclosure for work with children and vulnerable adults.
