Consultancy opportunity - International Timber Market Development

Sound and Fair Group is a wood processing company producing and distributing timber and wooden products internationally from a sawmill in Tanzania. The company supports the sustainable management of Tanzania’s forests through the exclusive purchase of FSC 100% logs from community-managed forests and is a major contributor to socio-economic development in local village communities.

Consultancy description

Sound and Fair is well established within a single timber market sector – musical instruments. The company wishes to expand its sales and market reach into new sectors including flooring, furniture and wooden household / consumer products. Concurrently, Sound and Fair is exploring the market potential for 12 new timber species alongside already established species. The consultancy entails the management of the international elements of a timber market development project aiming to introduce these new, lesser known timber species to markets via commercial samples and wood user feedback in a range of wood industry sectors. The successful applicant will report to the UK Managing Director on this initiative as well as liaising with Sound and Fair team members in Tanzania. The consultant will be expected to travel to Tanzania at the start of the consultancy to gain an understanding of the background to these timbers, plus participate in a workshop in Tanzania at the end of the consultancy to share lessons learned with project stakeholders.

Consultancy objectives

  • Set up sales management / CRM system and incorporate all current and historic company data;
  • Establish a web-based project management system for the initiative;
  • Develop marketing assets and materials including online content for lesser known timber species;
  • Research and develop new wood user network for sampling / testing of lesser known timber species;
  • Attend relevant industry conferences and events where appropriate;
  • Liaise with Tanzanian university regarding wood testing and ensure correct commercial data sets;
  • Organise the re-distribution of wood samples to clients after arrival of a container shipment in the UK;
  • Follow up with clients to gather data on suitability of wood species for specific products / markets;
  • Produce monthly project progress reports;
  • Assist with quarterly and end of project financial and stakeholder reports.

Sound and Fair is a new company in the early stages of development and the position would be home / remote based. A European location would be an advantage for communications with other project staff.

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least 5 years’ experience in business sales or marketing, ideally with wood industry experience;
  • The successful applicant will be a natural sales person with the ability to network and develop good relationships with clients and other stakeholders;
  • A holder of a degree in business or marketing related studies.

£35,000 - work phased over 18 months between October 2018–March 2020. Travel costs covered.
