The University of Winchester is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic self-starter to join their Estates and Facilities team as an Energy and Environment Manager to shape the next phase of its environmental improvement programme. With senior level commitment to sustainability, the University has made impressive progress on reducing its environmental impacts in the last 10 years, including a significant reduction in carbon emissions, increasing recycling rates, reducing the amount of waste generated and reducing water consumption. The University has also been the proud recipient of numerous sustainability rewards, recently winning a National Recycling and Green Gown Awards for its innovative disposable cup reduction project. The University is also working on an exciting programme to embed sustainability throughout the formal, informal and subliminal curriculum using the Responsible Futures framework.

The role holder will join the Estates team at an exciting time of campus expansion. The University is working on its most significant construction project to date, a new 7,500 m2 learning and teaching building that will be delivered in 2020. As well as being a landmark building for the city it is also the first construction project in the HE sector to be financed by an Ethical Bank. It is also working on an ambitious campus masterplan running until 2030, with a programme of building replacement and refurbishments which will meet the highest environmental standards.

The role holder will have line management responsibility for the Energy and Environment team, and will be operationally responsible for the implementation of the carbon management programme, energy management and procurement, waste management, biodiversity, travel and transport initiatives and staff and student engagement programmes. The role holder will also be responsible for implementing a formal environmental management system to ISO 14001 standards.[L1]

As our ideal candidate you will have significant experience in a similar role, together with a good understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, waste management and carbon reduction. You will be organised and flexible in your approach and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You will be confident in interacting with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels of the Institution.

One of our core values is ‘individuals matter’. As an employee at the University of Winchester, we are committed to your wellbeing and development. You will have access to a wide range of benefits and support including complimentary access to the GetActive initiative, comprehensive staff development programme, generous holiday entitlement and pension scheme.
