Ethical Consumer is a not-for-profit co-operative based in Manchester, working to make businesses more sustainable through consumer pressure. We are currently recruiting for two Writer, Researcher and Coop Member Posts, and one Technical support worker and co-op member post.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Post 1: Writer, Researcher & Coop Member. Salary £12,105 for 24 hours per week.Permanent post.

Post 2: Writer, Researcher & Coop Member. Salary £17,654 for 35 hours per week. Permanent post.

Location: Ethical Consumer Research Association (ECRA) offices, Hulme, Manchester. This is an office-based post and remote working is not currently available.

Co-operative Responsibilities

All permanent staff are members of the co-operative. All members share the responsibilities of running the co-operative. Shared duties include:

  • Taking part in the decision making process.
  • Attending co-operative meetings every Tuesday and additional meetings when required.
  • Help with the tasks required for running the office – mailing, answering phones, and general administrative tasks are all shared by the co-op.

Specific responsibilities

  • The researcher will be helping to produce research for publication in Ethical Consumer magazine and on its website. For the first six months, the employee will research and write at least one product guide every two months with training and supervision. This involves using and adding data onto a customised database. After this, the co-op member will continue to contribute product guides, features or news items as agreed collectively.
  • Research for our database on ethical performance. This will involve press monitoring, reading through campaign group publications, news material and corporate communications to extract relevant information. Information is then summarised and added to the database.
  • Assisting magazine researchers to update companies for Ethical Consumer.
  • Assisting with research for external consultancy clients. To date, clients have included selected organisations such as Lush Cosmetics, Move Your Money, the Rainforest Foundation, Stop Funding Hate, Friends of the Earth and the Fairtrade Foundation.

Other duties

Management duties are shared throughout the co-op and the new recruit will also be involved in working in or managing certain areas, which could include: enquiries, consultancy, subscriptions, personnel, finance, magazine production, support in organising events, fundraising, marketing, volunteer coordination, campaigning, website, editing.

  • Training specific to research and administrative roles for Ethical Consumer will be given.

We are also interested in other skills you could bring to the team. For example, public speaking, tech support, filming, video & audio editing, crowdfunding, designing political campaigns.
