Job Purpose

Global Generation is looking for a gardener who is passionate about urban gardening as well as involving the community in gardening. As a Global Generation Gardener, you will be responsible for tending the plants that grow in skips, polytunnels, the glasshouse, restaurant planters and rooftops. You will engage local young people, families and volunteers in Global Generation’s gardening projects.

Organisational Context

Global Generation has an established network of urban food-growing sites in King’s Cross. Our work is focused on the development of the whole person, providing support for young people to become catalysts for change in their communities. We integrate values-based reflective learning into practical sessions, enabling young people to grow themselves, grow relationships and grow a new vision for the future.

The Skip Garden is Global Generation’s ‘mothership’. It is an urban oasis with a twist - a portable garden that moves to different locations on the King's Cross site as and when land is sold and built on. It is a garden of a thousand hands, built with students from the Bartlett School of Architecture, young people and local business volunteers, together creating a new and sustainable community. The food we grow in the Skip Garden gets used in our cafe.

In addition to the Skip Garden, we also design, create and maintain edible gardens with local schools and residents through running workshops with them as well as for local restaurants and businesses, such as Caravan, Rotunda, Waitrose and the Office Group. This aspect of the work is not only an important income earner in order to reinvest the money into our community projects, it is also an educational platform in itself to bring different people together and learn in a hands on way.

As the Gardener you will work closely with the Education & Community Programmes team, Gardens team, Education & Community Chef, volunteers and young people.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As the Gardener you will be caring for the plants at the Skip Garden and surrounding planters and roof gardens in King’s Cross. Tasks will include, but are not be limited to:

  • Doing the terrace round twice a week to look after the gardens we tend outside of the Skip Garden (currently Rotunda, Waitrose, Caravan, Cut + Grind, roof of Stanley building and new gardens coming on board soon)
  • Tending to the Skip Garden including: watering the garden, looking after the seedlings and polytunnel crops, manage any garden pest infestation, feed the worms and keep an eye on the compost bins
  • Work with the team on the garden development
  • Work with the team to install new gardens
  • Deliver school and community gardening sessions and workshops
  • Engage with visitors and young people who visit the garden
  • Attend meetings as required and input into vision of gardens and wider organisation

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years experience of organic urban growing, in particular the growing of vegetables and fruit
  • Passionate about working with children, young people and volunteers and to engage them in ways to help them connect to nature and learn new skills
  • Experience of planning creative gardening sessions including outdoor and indoor tasks year long
  • A love of working outdoors, passion for the natural environment and urban gardening
  • Ready to take initiative, a flexible attitude and able to deal with change
  • Great administration and organisational skills
  • Empathy with Global Generation’s ethos and interest in values based learning

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Practical horticulture degree, although we will consider anyone with relevant experience.
