Working alongside the CEO, the Finance Director will provide commercial, financial and governance leadership for the Charity (the “Company”). The FD will not only be an exceptional accountant, with executive oversight of the finance function, but will be commercially astute and have the confidence to robustly represent the best interests of the Company at all levels of the Company

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Act as a business partner to support and constructively challenge the Chairman and CEO in overseeing the general management of the Company
  2. Lead all aspects of the finance function (including maintaining and developing the financial control environment; robust financial accounting; cashflow management; incisive management information; clear and concise reporting to Board) to ensure that the Company’s assets are secured, that the Company understands itself better and that the Company is able to make well-informed decisions
  3. Manage relationships with auditors, funders, IT specialists, banks and others external organisations
  4. Provide support to project bids and the development of other commercial opportunities to ensure that bids/opportunities are optimised for the Company as a whole
  5. Provide input to project delivery, including direct involvement on project management as necessary from time to time, to ensure that project performance is optimised for the Company as a whole
  6. Attend Board meetings and guide the Board and the Senior Leadership Team on commercial and governance issues
  7. Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and Companies House and, from time to time, provide guidance to members of the rivers trust movement on good governance practice

Staff Management:

  1. Lead, manage and develop the finance team and ensure the team understands their contribution to achieving the Company’s objectives
  2. Ensure the team deliver a customer-focussed service

Person Specification:

  1. Degree-level education, a qualified member of an accountancy body
  2. Good analytical/problem-solving skills and a creative innovator
  3. Strong interpersonal skills with the charm and persuasiveness to inspire enthusiasts at all levels of the company
  4. Strong communications skills with the ability to quickly distil complexity into pertinent, concise and understandable messages to a variety of audiences
  5. The courage to make tough and unpopular decisions
  6. The strength to hold your nerve under pressure and have resilience when things do not go to plan
  7. High standards of integrity and personal ethics

Hours: 0.6 FTE (think in terms of 39 days per quarter rather than 3 days per week)

Responsible for: Finance staff

Important Functional Relationships:

  1. Internal: Chairman, Rivers Trust Board, CEO and Senior Leadership Team
  2. External: Defra, Government Agencies (EA, NE etc.), rivers trusts, other NGOs, environmental consultants and water companies
