Purpose of the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in projects using the power of information and data to support livelihoods in developing countries. This post will be responsible for the generation, management and delivery of content, with opportunity to support knowledge management activities such as gathering and assessing user needs, product development and project management.

You will have a role in the Knowledge Management team, focusing primarily on CABI’s Action on Invasives programme. Action on Invasives is a CABI-led initiative that applies and promotes an environmentally sustainable, regional approach to comprehensive biological invasion management to protect and improve the livelihoods of poor rural families.

This post will be located in CABI’s UK head office, but with substantial interfacing with other CABI centres around the world.

Key accountabilities:

  • Use knowledge of content and editorial processes to manage and deliver new content in line with CABI’s content delivery systems and platforms.
  • Play a key role in the creation of content, such as writing blogs, writing generic factsheet content, and preparing other material.
  • Edit and manage the technical peer review of information materials for the Action on Invasives programme. Manage coverage, quality and quantity of other relevant external content. This content may include external factsheets, datasets, videos, images, news articles, and other relevant types.
  • Negotiate with internal and external suppliers to ensure that they meet deadlines and maintain quality; likely to involve commissioning, editing and management of peer review of expert summaries of invasive species.
  • Liaise with the Content Manager (ISC, Editorial), Compendium Programme Manager and others across the Content Development Department on issues of quality, quantity and development of content processed for this area.
  • Liaise with Publishing Operations team and others across CABI who are responsible for the general creation, commissioning or acquisition of content types relevant to this area to integrate processes into CABI’s broader editorial processes. Document new or improved content processes.
  • Liaise with IT to test and provide input to developments of invasive species information products and decision support tools.
  • Plan and manage the acquisition of images and extension materials. Use CABI’s asset management system to ensure effective use of images.
  • Disseminate practical information for projects focusing on invasive species management, prevention and control.
  • Contribute to data management activities, working with Action on Invasives partners in country, and managing communication with internal and external users. Manage, curate, and analyse project data e.g. that derived from in-country field surveys, ensuring that it is processed appropriately and adheres to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data standards and is GDPR compliant.
  • Promote and demonstrate the value of knowledge, data, and digital tools to internal and external partners.
  • Work with others across the programme to deliver and demonstrate progress towards milestones.
  • Participate in projects and business development opportunities where editorial input is required.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

You will have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in an appropriate scientific discipline with an interest in developing a career in scientific content development, editing, data management or knowledge management. You will have excellent organisational and communication skills. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to write and edit scientific content to a high standard. You will have good basic IT skills, with proficiency in Excel and Word. Knowledge of invasive species is required.

Knowledge & Skills

REQUIRED   

  • Strong scientific background in a discipline relevant to invasive species, particularly invasive plant pests.
  • Creation of written scientific outputs; ability to write clearly for a wide variety of audiences, from farmers to policy makers.
  • Excellent communicator – Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific information clearly and concisely both in writing and verbally.
  • Attention to detail - Able to demonstrate a high level of editorial accuracy and values high quality editorial outputs.
  • IT literate – Can show good understanding of typical IT programmes
  • Is well organised, target-orientated and has proven experience of trouble-shooting and determination to overcome challenges. Able to prioritise activities, work on multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in an editorial role or in another information role related to a scientific discipline or international development context
  • Excellent English language skills
  • End user focused

DESIRABLE    

  • Knowledge of database management
  • Familiarity with CABI publishing systems and processes (e.g. Flagstaff)
  • Experience of applying knowledge management skills to deliver scientific information to a variety of stakeholders in an international development environment
  • Product management experience
  • Knowledge of other languages would be beneficial

Education & Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Undergraduate degree in an appropriate scientific discipline

DESIRABLE    

  • MSc, or higher qualification in invasive species management or other relevant scientific discipline.
