Purpose of the role:

This is a project-focused role for a dynamic individual with strong technical and scientific skills. You will work on a range of projects in support of the Sustainable Development Goals and CABI’s Knowledge Management project portfolio, applying digital tools and data to support food security, agriculture, and improved environmental management in developing countries.

You will contribute to the development of digital tools such as databases and mobile apps, managing and analysing project data, ensuring scientifically accurate information, gathering and assessing user needs, and engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Most of your work will fall under the Plantwise programme, though you will contribute to other projects including Action on Invasives. Plantwise is a large global initiative, led by CABI, to improve food security and the lives of the rural poor by reducing crop losses. Action on Invasives is a CABI-led initiative that applies and promotes an environmentally sustainable, regional approach to comprehensive biological invasion management to protect and improve the livelihoods of poor rural families.

This post will be located in CABI’s UK head office, but with substantial interfacing with other CABI centres around the world.

Key accountabilities:

You will work across Plantwise, Action on Invasives, and other projects to:

  • Manage project data (e.g. from in-country field surveys), ensuring that it is processed and held appropriately, and adheres to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data standards and is GDPR compliant.
  • Work with partners in country to build capacity for data management, and manage communication with internal and external users of the Plantwise Online Management System data platform
  • Undertake data analysis, delivering high quality insights into research questions
  • Develop plant health or invasive species related content, such as writing blogs or factsheets, and preparing other information materials.
  • Deliver training on a wide range of topics, from principles of data management to the use of specific tools we have developed
  • Promote and demonstrate the value of knowledge, data, and digital tools to internal and external partners.
  • Work with others across the knowledge management team to deliver and demonstrate progress towards CABI, Plantwise, Action on Invasives, and project milestones.
  • Participate in the development of new project proposals as opportunities arise.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

You will have experience working in developing countries, and a strong understanding of the agricultural and environmental challenges that they face. Ideally this experience will have been in projects and programmes related to the use of digital tools, agriculture, invasive species, and/or nutrition. You will have an MSc in a scientific discipline relevant to Integrated Pest Management or invasive species and a proven ability to manage information and data. You will have strong organisational and communication skills. You will have excellent data management, analysis, and writing skills. . You will have good basic project management and IT expertise, with proficiency in Excel and Word.

Knowledge & Skills

REQUIRED    

  • Strong scientific background in a discipline relevant to Integrated Pest Management
  • High degree of data literacy; familiarity with data management and analysis tools
  • Creation of written scientific outputs; ability to write clearly for a wide variety of audiences, from farmers to policy makers.
  • Excellent communicator – Demonstration of ability for clear, concise written and verbal communications.
  • IT literate – Can show good understanding of typical IT programmes.
  • Basic project management skills – Is well organised, target-orientated and has proven experience of trouble-shooting and determination to overcome challenges. Able to prioritise activities, work on multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent English language skills.

DESIRABLE    

  • Knowledge of database management and mobile devices
  • Familiarity with User-Centred Design approaches
  • Foreign language skills, particularly in French, Spanish, and/or Portuguese
  • Proficiency with statistical software (ideally R)
  • Familiarity with the Principles for Digital Development
  • Project management experience
  • Product management experience
  • Experience working in an international development environment

Education & Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Undergraduate degree in an appropriate scientific discipline

DESIRABLE

  • MSc, or higher qualification in Integrated Pest Management or other relevant scientific discipline
  • Prince 2 project management qualification
