Title: Market Gardener
Responsible to: Project Manager and Beechbrae Board
Hours of work: 2 days per week (Monday to Friday with occasional evenings & weekends)
Salary: £20,000 pro rata (16 hours, part time)
Duration of post: from August 2018 until 31 March 2019 (with possible extension for another year)
Closing Date: Friday 27th July at 12 noon
Interview Date: Wednesday 1st August 2018

Job Purpose:

  • To grow food on a market garden scale at Beechbrae Community Garden
  • To manage and develop the forest garden at Beechbrae Orchard
  • To manage and upkeep Beechbrae Wood, Community Garden and Orchard
  • To manage community growing volunteers and provide weekly tasks

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan growing rotations in polytunnels and surrounding area
  • Plan, design and plant the forest garden in the orchard according to permaculture principles
  • Keep Garden and Orchard areas tidy, build infrastructure as needed (shelving, digging drainage etc)
  • Prepare ground for 2018 growing season
  • Design planting plan & purchase appropriate seeds & plants
  • Have good health and safety working practice & carry out risk assessments
  • Offer a welcoming & helpful attitude to people interested in growing food
  • Provide basic training to volunteers on the use of tools, preparing ground for planting, planting & sowing, weeding and vegetable storage
  • Record data of food grown on monthly basis to report to funders
  • Report regularly to management team to ensure targets being met in line with guidelines
  • Any other duties as required to the benefit of the project

PERSON SPECIFICATION - Experience, Skills & Abilities


  • Successful track record of growing vegetables on a market garden scale
  • Self-motivated and able to prioritise workload
  • Ability to work with, motivate and encourage people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities
  • Proactive self-starter
  • Highly organised, committed and responsible
  • Familiarity of working in an outdoors environment
  • Commitment to organic growing and good horticultural skills
  • Ability to work flexibly, including evenings and occasional weekends


  • Appropriate professional and educational qualifications e.g. NVQ3 or equivalent in amenity horticulture or a directly related field or directly related work experience
  • Proven track record of growing in a garden/ park setting open to the public
  • Prior work experience in an outdoor environment
  • Prior work experience in an educational setting
  • Experience of working with vulnerable people
  • Awareness of environmental good practice
  • Knowledge of the concepts of carbon reduction, climate change and the effects of peak oil
  • First Aid training
  • Clean driving licence
  • Resident of Blackridge
