At Melton Borough Council, we are looking for a Planning Technician to work with a variety of our teams including support work for the council ambitious Local Plan. If you’re a talented GIS user who is confident working on their own initiative, we want to hear from you!

We need:

We need a Planning Technician (GIS and Local Plan) who can assist in the delivery of the Council’s Development Control and Planning Policy Services, with particular responsibility for the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) databases and research intelligence that underpin these service areas. You will also give support to the Local Planning team who are responsible for the completion and delivery of the Council’s ambitious Local Plan.

You are:

  • Equipped with a good understanding of the principles of GIS and information management. Including:
    • a practical understanding of the role of GIS data within development control, building control/or licensing processes
    • experience developing, administering and supporting GIS systems.
  • An enthusiastic and energetic advocate for the business benefits of GIS.
  • A fully qualified driver with access to your own car.
  • Able to work on your own initiative and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • An excellent communicator and successful negotiator.
  • Computer literate: experienced using IT systems to assist service delivery.
  • Educated to GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths (or equivalent qualification).
  • Flexible in your approach to team work and working patterns.
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of personal performance.

In an ideal world, you are also:

  • Experienced using any of the following:
    • ArcView, ArcSDE and ArcIMS
    • Digital mapping data and databases.
    • Digital mapping data and databases.
    • OS digital data and updating the data (including translation into other file formats).
    • IDOX Uniform and/or LALPAC system
  • Experienced geo-referencing of large databased within a GIS.
  • Experienced working in Planning
  • Aware and have an understanding of the Councils’ Corporate approach to service delivery and Corporate Priorities.
  • A graduate of / or hold qualifications in a related subject.

Day in the Life:

  • Upload a new, relevant data set onto the corporate GIS data base.
  • Working on the new local plan, contributing to delivering growth and future prosperity
  • Assist planning officers and senior staff regarding the processing of planning and related applications, enquires and appeals.
  • Liaise with an external organisation to ensure the effective export of information from the council.
  • Opportunity to use your flexi-time to take advantage of the nearby sports and leisure facilities.
  • Interact with colleagues as you provide training and advice on the use of GIS within the Authority.
  • Contribute to the investigation of an enforcement case.
  • Analyse and efficiently interpret data using GIS and other data systems to assist the Planning Policy team. Including creating maps and technical information to feed into policy documents.
  • Participate in the consultation process associated with the Local Plan and its future development.
  • Respond to general enquiries and provide advice to members of the public, developers, other bodies and other Council services on national, strategic and local planning policies and programmes.

Hours/Week: 37 hours
Annual leave: 22 days plus bank holidays
Work outside normal hours: Some out of hours work may be required (overtime paid after 6pm)
