Cain Bio-Engineering is an established specialist in the delivery of river restoration and environmentally friendly erosion control projects working with a wide range of private and public sector clients including the Environment Agency, regional councils and NGO’s.


Based in the picturesque rural Avon valley on the edge of the New Forest National Park we are seeking a River Technician to assist with our busy programme of aquatic habitat restoration projects in rivers, tidal channels, estuaries, canals and lakes. The work is varied, ranging from in-river habitat creation to improving chalk stream trout fisheries, weir bypass channels, Dam repairs and erosion control in inter-tidal channels. Ongoing training will be provided for professional development in a supervised and safe working environment.

This is a full-time permanent post. The Company operates nationally, with a higher proportion of projects in Southern and Eastern England. When working on large-scale projects, you may be required to stay away 4 nights a week with benefits.


Reports directly to Line Manager


The job will entail working as a river technician with operation of plant for a majority of the time. Some manual work will be required as necessary during installation depending on the project. The role will include:

  • Manage plant operations according to required safety measures.
  • Maintain records of plant maintenance including weekly and daily checks and repairs undertaken.
  • Maintain all plant operations documents and ensure compliance to all policies and regulations.
  • Collaborate with staff and sub-contractors for all plant and machinery activities.
  • Monitor all safety issues associated with plant and report to line manager.
  • Working in waders / life jackets when required (when not operating plant) with some manual handling requirements for installation of works.
  • Working around protected species and within sensitive wildlife sites.


  • CSCS Card
  • CPCS or NPORS for tracked 360 excavator and wheeled / tracked dumpers (or sufficient experience to gain required plant qualifications)
  • Physically fit and energetic
  • Previous construction experience essential
  • Experience of physical work
  • Interest and experience in environmental or river work
  • Swimming ability essential
  • Full driving licence essential
  • Good positive attitude
  • Ability to work either in a team or unsupervised; self-motivated
  • Good interpersonal skills

Preference may be given to applicants with any of the following:

  • Chainsaw NPTC CS30/31
  • First Aid


Salary: dependent upon skills and experience, on an individual basis.
