We are seeking a Consultant/Project Manager for the assessment, design and delivery of freshwater and tidal-related habitat restoration works including; river restoration, erosion control, infrastructure & dam repairs and Wetland habitat enhancement. This is a full-time, permanent post. The Company operates nationally, so the post will require occasional overnight stays away to service consultancy survey and design assignments and/or to manage project operations.

Cain Bio-Engineering is a specialist design/build company operating from its recently-expanded, company-owned premises in the rural Avon valley south of Salisbury. We employ teams of design consultants, surveyors, project managers and skilled river technicians to implement our projects. The company operates throughout the UK providing ‘design & construction’ services for schemes ranging from river restoration and erosion control to dam repairs and river engineering works both in tidal and fresh water environments. The successful applicant will play a key role in the company’s development plan with the aim of progressing in the future through to senior consultant/project manager. On-going training will be provided.



To provide consultancy services for river habitat restoration, wetland and bio-engineering projects, from initial site visit through to preparation of proposals, report documents, technical drawings, client liaison and briefing of project installation teams. Larger projects will require specific project management and may require weekly site attendance. This role is also to provide installation guidance to project installation teams as required.


Reports directly to Managing Director. Due to the varied nature of the role and tasks involved, close liaison with other members of the Consultancy and Operation teams is essential.



  • Production of documents including drawings (Corel Draw), reports, proposals and cost estimates;
  • Plan and undertake site investigations in and alongside waterways;
  • Undertake/assist site topographical surveys (level and staff);
  • Assist with programme management; and
  • Project set-up including obtaining quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, production of utility packs, producing bills of quantities from drawings, preparation of risk assessment and method statements, project and installation supervision.
  • Project management including organisation of programme and maintaining project to time and budget.

IT & Technical Drawing

  • Production (or overseeing) of high quality technical design drawings using GIS/Corel Draw/AutoCAD.
  • General administration support where required including managing enquiries and electronic filing systems.


  • Assist Managing Director and supporting Consultants with management tasks as required.
  • Ensuring that work meets all relevant legislative standards including Health & Safety and environmental requirements.
  • Other general duties as required.



  • An environmental, engineering or science based qualification; or
  • Equivalent commercial or practical experience in the office or field;
  • Understand small business functions and have an appreciation of ecology, river engineering, river management, fluvial geomorphology, Hydrology or river restoration;
  • Use of Corel Draw and GIS packages and /or demonstrate an ability to quickly and competently learn new IT software packages (in-house training will be provided).
  • Competent writer of technical reports;
  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Physically fit and able to swim, work can involve walking for prolonged periods along river banks and in rivers/lakes/tidal zones;
  • Full clean driving licence;
  • Good interpersonal skills and be both a good team player and can work unsupervised;
  • Creative/articulate/innovative.


  • A minimum of 4+ years’ work experience;
  • SMSTS/CSCS card holder advantageous (training will be provided if required);
  • Previous on-site construction experience.


Salary: £24k to 34k+ depending on experience; to be discussed on an individual basis. Training expenses will be provided as required.
