Job Title: Country Trust Food Discovery Coordinator, Norwich and Great Yarmouth (self employed)

Location: Homebased but working with schools and farm hosts in and around Norwich and Great Yarmouth areas

Reports to: Food Discovery Manager

Responsible for: Delivering The Country Trust’s Food Discovery programme to initially two schools in the Norwich/Great Yarmouth area over the academic year 2018-19. The post holder will be responsible for planning and teaching growing and cooking sessions for children, teachers and parents, organising playground markets, organising visits to local farms, coordinating visits to schools by local food producers, and planning and running harvest feasts. The job has a great potential to transform lives.

You will be based from home but travel to various schools and farms to deliver the programme, and you will be the local face of The Country Trust in the area to schools and farmer hosts, along with our other Food Discovery coordinators and Farm Discovery coordinators in East Anglia

The role is essentially term-time and the post-holder will be able to manage their own work-load.

This is a self employed role.

*NB: In our experience this role may not always enable you to undertake a school run before starting work. School holidays - we are keen to explore the potential to support a limited number of school holiday programmes for disadvantaged children, though recognise this may not be feasible for all coordinators.

Ideal Candidate:

You will have considerable experience (min. 2-5 years) of teaching or successfully delivering programmes to primary age children. You will have a real love of, and knowledge of food, farming and the countryside. You should be a competent cook and gardener, ideally with experience of running these activities with schools and/or other groups. We are looking for a self-motivated, well-organised, creative individual skilled at helping children of all backgrounds and abilities to succeed. You’ll be at ease with the farming and landowning community and very aware of the responsibility of bringing children onto real working farms. You’ll be a team player but confident enough to work within a dispersed team reporting to a manager based elsewhere in the UK.

Training: You will be provided with training in Country Trust delivery including Health and Safety, and Safeguarding standards and expectations

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the local face of The Country Trust, representing our values and helping to achieve our outcomes, bringing the working countryside alive for those children least able to access it through delivering high quality, transformational activities and visits
  • Plan and implement growing areas on school grounds including simple composting systems where appropriate.
  • Introduce Food Discovery to teachers, teaching staff, pupils and parents inspiring and motivating them for the year ahead.
  • Work with the class teacher to plan how to most effectively embed Food Discovery into classroom learning, and how to monitor and evaluate impact (working with the FD team to implement best practice).
  • Undertake risk assessments for all the activities you lead (working to the CT’s H and S Policy) and ensure that all our activities are consistently safe and high quality, and that schools and farmers receive and are aware of all necessary documents covering risk assessment, liabilities, safeguarding, health and safety etc.
  • Plan and deliver safe, high quality, engaging cooking and growing sessions, playground markets and harvest feast for children, teachers and parents ensuring all children can participate fully.
  • Identify and recruit suitable host farms and estates for farm visits
  • Attend preliminary visits and offer support to farmers and teachers in the preparation of risk assessments and planning educational activities for a planned farm visit.
  • Report regularly on number of visits undertaken, and number of visits planned, number of children involved, evaluation of visits, accidents and incidents, near misses etc.
  • Help our fundraising team to maintain relationships with existing funders including providing information for reports to existing funders on activity delivered, and looking out for fundraising opportunities.
  • Help our Communications team to raise our profile in the media by keeping them informed of visits, activities and opportunities, supplying information as required and uploading photographs.
  • If agreed, attend and represent the CT at seminars, meetings, etc and be able to showcase and promote the work of the CT.
  • Prepare regular financial, evaluation and activity reports in a timely fashion, as required by the Project Manager and the funder.
  • Attend team meetings as required.

  • Always be looking for fund raising opportunities, and report these to the central fundraising team. Help our fundraising team to maintain relationships with existing funders including providing information for reports to existing funders on activity delivered.
  • If agreed, prepare, promote and deliver a CPD session for teachers.
  • Recruit, train and manage volunteers for a range of roles if necessary – supporting activities etc. (working to CT polices and standards).

Summary of Main Terms and Conditions

Contract Term: Initially one year self-employed, renewable annually, subject to funding.

Scale of contract: number of days: around 40 depending on the needs of the schools and the funds available. 

The majority of delivery is within term time and within the school day though travel/preparation might be required before the start of and after the end of the school day.

Remuneration: £144 per day from 1st September plus reasonable expenses and mileage (currently 45p/mile). Normal business expenses (telephone, printing, broadband, office costs etc) are the responsibility of the contractor. The post holder must submit monthly invoices and expenses at the end of each month according to the deadlines issued. These are then paid/reimbursed by the 18th of the month.

Additional requirements: The role requires a car driver with their own reliable car with business insurance cover. You will require a computer with an up to date operating system (compatible with Windows 10 and Office 365), and internet access of sufficient quality (Business ideally), and personal IT proficiency (including a working knowledge of Word and Excel) that ensures you can function as part of the Country Trust team including Skype (for Business) conference calls. You will be required to travel to occasional team and staff meetings. The Country Trust will provide you with an email address but you will be responsible for providing a contact telephone number.

Background to this role: One of our amazing coordinators is leaving us to travel and there is increasing demand for our work in this area.
