Livestock Ranger - Residential

Salary range: £24,770 to £28,180 per annum including all allowances.

The post holder will work from the Merlewood Estate Office in Caterham, Surrey and will be required to live locally in a 3-bedroom lodge that is provided for better performance of your duties.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced livestock ranger to work with us in delivering a comprehensive grazing programme across our Open Spaces.

If you are interested in working with the local community to protect and conserve beautiful and historic landscapes on the fringe of Surrey via a programme of conservation grazing management then we would love to hear from you.

You will be part of an operational ranger team responsible for a cluster of commons that are managed for their rich natural and cultural heritage, as well as for informal recreation.

You should have excellent communication skills and hold an appropriate qualification (diploma or NVQ Level 2) in a land management discipline. You also need to have a full driving licence. To meet the challenges of this post, you will have proven experience of livestock management, both cattle and sheep, practical countryside management, supervising projects and working effectively in teams and alone.

The Merlewood Estate Office at Caterham is the central operational base for four of the City of London’s Open Spaces (Kenley Common, Coulsdon Common, Farthing Downs & New Hill and Riddlesdown) offering the successful candidate an exciting opportunity to provide a joined-up approach to animal husbandry, welfare and pasture management across high quality downland landscapes.

The working week is based upon an average 37-hour week, including one in three weekends and some evening working. You will also be placed on an out-of-office hours duty rota.

This unique post requires an individual who is looking to further their career, develop new skills and be at the centre of a team responsible for managing some of the country’s finest open spaces.
