About this job

The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has a great collection of parks and open spaces providing 463 hectares of publicly accessible greenspace. The borough portfolio, which consists of eight ‘District Parks’, eleven ‘Local Parks’ and nine ‘Small Open Spaces’, is valued and well used by residents and many visitors to the borough.

However, Barking and Dagenham is going to experience a period of rapid housing growth with over 35,000 new homes being provided at various sites over the next 20 years. New public open spaces will be at the centre of these new developments. But it is essential that all the borough’s exiting parks and open spaces are also benefitting local communities as much as they can.

Therefore, we’re looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join our dynamic Ranger Service to help make sure that the borough’s parks and open spaces deliver as many positive outcomes as possible for the community, environment and economy.

As part of the wider Ranger Service, the primary purpose of this role is to support the transformation of the borough’s greenspaces in accordance with the Council’s Vision and Priorities, the Borough Manifesto, Corporate Plan 2018-2022, Parks and Open Spaces Strategy 2017 and other key strategies.

The primary role of the Community Ranger will be to manage, maintain and promote the borough’s parks and open spaces as resources and safe places for: community engagement and empowerment, volunteering, environmental education and nature conservation, health improvement, community food growing, play, and a diverse and exciting events and activities programme.

Identifying external and internal sources of funding, working with key partners to submit robust funding bids and delivering associated projects on time, within budget and to the expected standard will be a key part of the Community Ranger’s duties.

The successful candidate must have the enthusiasm and necessary skills and experience to develop and improve the borough’s parks and open spaces, so they continue to deliver positive outcomes for the local community and help make Barking and Dagenham an attractive place to live, work and visit.

Therefore, as a Community Ranger you will have a significant part to play in the future development of the Borough and ensuring that the borough’s green spaces are at the heart of this.

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Andy Johnson, Commissioning Lead – Parks on 020 8227 5289.

Closing Date:  1st June 2018
