Job description

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment, helping to ensure that people can enjoy it. We look after the water environment and land quality, promoting sustainable land management and helping protect and enhance wildlife habitats. We also work closely with businesses, enabling them to operate whilst complying with relevant environmental regulations.

Being a Permitting Officer is one of the most important roles at the Environment Agency. You’ll join one of our national permitting teams in either waste, water quality or water resources and you’ll help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment. You’ll assess a variety of applications for environmental permits and licences across the country. You will carry out technical assessments and communicate with customers and other environmental bodies. You’ll have occasional site meetings. You will issue permits in line with relevant legislation and guidance. Permits and licences issued may include waste management sites, sewage treatment works and hydropower sites.

The role can be challenging, requiring you to manage a busy workload, consider new technologies, unusual locations and environmental sensitivities. The permitting process is well defined and training, mentoring and coaching is available, helping you become confident in the role. There is the opportunity for you to specialise in certain topics and be in control of your own development and career path.

The team

Environment Agency permitting teams’ primary role is to protect the environment and support economic growth through the environmental permits and licences we issue. Additional areas of work include providing advice and guidance to our internal and external customers and supporting other functions at the Environment Agency, including flooding and environmental incident response.

You will work with a team of other permitting officers doing similar work, based at one of our offices in the above locations.

About you

You’ll ideally have some experience in a customer-focused role and be used to managing multiple pieces of work to different deadlines. You will be interested in the environment and be keen to protect it by regulating potentially damaging activities. This may mean dealing with complex and difficult situations. You will be comfortable working to challenging performance targets.

Whilst relevant work experience would be an advantage, it’s much less important to us than your ability to demonstrate the key skills we’re looking for:

  • organise and prioritise a large workload
  • time management
  • adapt communication style to suit audience
  • make sound and timely decisions
  • integrate into a team
  • competent with a computer
  • enjoy working in an office
  • be passionate about the environment

Please do not be put off applying if you don’t have a degree or other qualification because we will provide you with all the training you’ll need.
