This is a part-time permanent position 32 hours a week based at the warehouse of The Community Farm in Chew Magna. Hours of work will include some early starts and occasional weekend shifts.

Salary £20,945 (pro rata). 28 days annual leave a year, rising to 32 days after 12 months continual service, and 33 days after 36 months.

The Organisation

The Community Farm is a social enterprise and a community supported agriculture project dedicated to environmental sustainability and community involvement.

We grow organic vegetables and fruit on around 15 acres and sell our produce and that of other (primarily local) organic growers to the local community, mostly through an organic box delivery scheme.

Our profits are used to provide learning experiences for children, adults and vulnerable people. We aim to enable people to reconnect with the land and where their food comes from through community engagement projects.

The Person

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated leader to join our small but lively warehouse team. We have cultivated a friendly and sociable work environment with a strong sense of camaraderie. As Wholesale Manager you will be heading up an outgoing team of full-time and part-time staff, as well as volunteers.

Essential criteria

  • An organised, thorough and methodical approach to work
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Diplomatic and able to work effectively under pressure
  • A full driving Licence
  • Strong IT skills, with a strong experience of spreadsheet use
  • Understanding of the importance of delivering the best possible produce to customers and maintaining high standards of quality control

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of profit and loss and how to grow and monitor business sales

The Job

Main duties

  • Oversee, manage and grow sales of wholesale.
  • Direct management of the key wholesale account - Better Food Company – to maintain quality and improve sales and margins.
  • To proactively take all necessary steps to ensure sales targets and margins are (at least) in line with budget.
  • Control all buying of produce; managing suppliers, meeting demand, and ensuring quality control of all incoming and outgoing produce meets the high standards.
  • Organise delivery logistics, with the input of the Warehouse Manager.
  • Maintain and develop good relationships with local producers.
  • Manage all variable overheads to within the parameters set by the budget.
  • Liaise closely with the Managing Director to discuss budget management and setting of targets.
  • Liaise closely with the Head Grower to determine produce availability.

People Management in Warehouse

  • Driver management, including rotas and holiday / sickness cover in close liaison with Warehouse Manager and with support of MD.
  • Line management of Warehouse Manager.
  • People support on farm as deemed necessary.

Legislative Responsibilities in the Warehouse

  • Take a proactive approach to all Health and Safety matters to meet policy and legal requirements.
  • Ensure that Environmental Health, Food Hygiene, Data protection, financial conduct, safeguarding and Trading Standards regulations are complied with.
  • Meet all Soil Association inspection requirements and ensure all records and paperwork are kept up to date.
