Paid • Full Time • Fixed Term Contract 01275 332 739 Ped Asgarian

Sectors: food, farming & horticulture, conservation & wildlife

Closing date: Thursday, 22nd March 2018   4 days left

We’re looking for two people to join our small but lively field team as Seasonal Field Workers. We’ve cultivated a sociable work environment with a strong sense of camaraderie.

You’ll be part of an outgoing team of full-time and part-time staff as well as volunteers, so the ability to work as part of a team is a must.

First and foremost you’ll need a basic understanding of farming principles and be happy and capable of performing farm labour in all weather conditions. A working knowledge of organic horticulture or sustainable agriculture would put you at an advantage.

You’ll need to have experience of working on a commercial farm or market garden. We’re a community owned social enterprise so experience in a small-business or in the not-for-profit sector would also be an advantage.

Main purpose of the job

To work at The Community Farm on all general horticultural tasks including harvesting, packing, planting, weeding and tending of organic vegetable crops. The business is an 8 acre organic market garden supplying a range of vegetables to our home-delivery box scheme and our wholesale customers.

Main duties

  • To work under the direction of the head grower on all horticultural tasks at the field including plant raising, weeding, planting, crop tending, irrigation and protected cropping (polytunnels). Also machinery and site maintenance work depending on prior experience and skills.
  • Harvesting and packing of farm produce to picking lists provided by the Head Grower or Warehouse Manager.

Standard working days

Monday to Friday

  • April & May: 7:30am – 4:00pm (inc. 30min unpaid break)
  • June, July, August: 7:00am – 3:30pm
  • September: 7:30am – 4:00pm
  • Hours may change to 6:00am or 6:30am to 2:30pm / 3:00pm in peak summer & hot weather.
  • Standard working days include Bank Holidays

Occasional working on a Saturday may be required, in lieu of a week day and with prior agreement.

Farming is seasonal and weather dependent, so the workload can vary from week to week and occasional flexibility on start and finish times may be asked for (within a maximum 40hrs total per week), where reasonable and agreed in advance between the employee and the Head Grower.

Future Growers

This post would be suitable for a trainee on the Soil Association ‘Future Growers’ scheme but is not restricted to people on the scheme. If the successful applicant is on the Future Growers scheme then mentoring will be provided by the Head Grower as well as appropriate work experience of organic horticulture work at TCF over the period of employment.

Terms and conditions

This is a fixed term contract for a full-time post, 26 weeks at 40 hours per week (5 days/week).

We may consider a 4 day working week (32 hours) that runs for 28 weeks, subject to agreement.

Start date 23 April 2018

Finish date 15 October 2018

Hourly pay rate £8.07/hour.

Annual Leave is 28 days pro rata.
