Gardening Co-ordinator

Contract Type: Fixed term contract ending August 2018

Salary: £29,424 - £33,627 pa (including London Weighting) Scale: Points 29-34 – Candidates will be appointed at Point 29

The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields (CSTM) provides services which help 4500 homeless people each year in London avoid, move away from and stay off the streets. Our direct services span Housing Advice, a Day Centre, a Night Centre and an Employment, Education and Training service. The charity has an annual turnover of £4.6m, a staff team of 115 and around 30 regular volunteers.

As part of the on-going development of our Group and Activities programme we are working with St Martins in the Field Church to introduce a new garden project in the courtyard of the Church. The objective is to offer meaningful activity to some of our clients but also forge greater links with our partners at the Church and develop the space into a sensory place for the local community to sit and appreciate the garden and maybe positively change perceptions of the homeless community.

Connections at St Martins are committed to working “with” not “for” our clients. This means that we see opportunities for client involvement at every level and stage of our group work programme: from planning through to evaluation, we consult with clients, staff and volunteers to guarantee that our work is shaped by their views and opinions. We see people who attend groups as assets with skills and recognise that they play an essential role in designing, delivering and evaluating our group work programme. We consider co-production as the key to breaking down barriers between the people that use our services and the people that are employed by the organisation. Power is shared amongst clients and staff at CSTM and we aim to use it in order to act as agents for change.

The gardening project is currently funded until the end of August, we are looking to sustain the project in order to enlarge the garden around the courtyard and local area and provide further volunteering and training opportunities. The successful candidate will work with us for 7 hours a week promoting the project, maintaining the site and helping with development. The charity is therefore recruiting for a Gardening Co-ordinator to work as part of the Day Centre team who will:

  • Work with Day center staff to promote the project and inspire involvement from the people who access the centre.
  • Maintain the garden, with client involvement, to a high standard.
  • Work with the Groups and Activities co-ordinator to meet funding obligations.
  • Work with the Groups and Activities co-ordinator to propose new opportunities for the project and liaise with key stake holders such as St Martins in the field Church.
  • Follow a 12 month maintenance plan, ensure work in partnership with the Group and Activities co-ordinator to ensure plants are ordered and receievd.
  • Contribute towards the development of co-production within the project
