Closing date: Wednesday, 21st March 2018   2 days left

Every day TCV works across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone - communities where our activities have a lasting impact on people's health, prospects and outdoor places.

The Conservation Volunteers is the UK’s leading practical conservation charity working with people from all sectors of the community in positive action to improve the environment. This project is funded through NHS Lothian Health Improvement Fund.

The Senior Project Officer will be in charge of setting up and delivering the new West Lothian Green Gym (WLGG) programme. The post is funded for a period of three years, working 28 hours per week, with a potential extension of a further year. It will provide opportunities for children and young people to increase their level of physical activity by taking part in a programme of outdoor activities.

TCV's Green Gym sessions are designed to provide opportunities for young people to be active, to learn about nature and the environment, and take part in practical gardening/environmental activity. The WLGG Programme will offer an alternative approach to exercise by encouraging young people, families, teachers and youth providers to increase their level of physical activity by taking part in a programme of outdoor activities as well as encouraging an interest and respect for the environment through practical conservation activities.

The WLGG Gym programme is suitable for young people of 7 years and above and, for this programme, there will be a focus on S1-S3 within Secondary Schools in West Lothian alongside a focus on supporting local youth providers to increase physical activity rates through facilitating environmental activity. The role will be supported from TCV’s Edinburgh office but day-to-day, the person will be physically based within West Lothian – most likely from West Calder.

Please note – the post is for 4 days a week within the core hours of Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm. However, the nature of the role involves providing activities and events for a range of communities. It is therefore expected that the post holder would support and deliver events during evenings and weekends. This will be planned on a flexible basis and time off in-lieu will be provided. However we anticipate it will amount to approximately 1 weekend and a handful of evening sessions each month.

A bit more about us:

We recognise that each community and the people living there have different needs. Whether improving wellbeing, conserving a well-loved outdoor space or bringing people together to promote social cohesion and combat loneliness, TCV works together with communities to deliver practical solutions to the real life challenges they face.

For over 50 years we have adapted our work with volunteers to reflect the changing needs of communities in the UK and, by giving people a sense of purpose and belonging, we have empowered them to take control of their lives and outdoor spaces for the benefit of all.

Whilst our activities vary, our inclusive approach has remained consistent; bringing people and places together to create happy, healthy and connected communities for everyone.
