Rangers have always been a hugely important part of The National Trust, and play a crucial role thinking about the long term, in order to look after our special places. As part of the wider Ranger team, we need you to think about our impact on the environment, and find better ways to do things.

Please be advised this role will involve regular weekend work. Additionally, out-of-hours working will be a requirement (for which time off in lieu will be taken).

What it's like to work here

Hatfield Forest is the best surviving example in Britain of an almost complete Royal Hunting Forest. It’s seen many owners, from Kings to commoners. No other Forest on earth evokes the atmosphere of a medieval hunting forest so completely. The traditional woodland management techniques of coppicing, pollarding and grazing are continued today. It is home to over 3,500 species of wildlife, some of which are rare and threatened.

What you'll be doing

As our Lead Ranger, you’ll be responsible for the management of a team of 2 Rangers, an Assistant Ranger, Deer Stalkers, Volunteer Rangers and other volunteer groups who care for our 424 hectare forest. You’ll also co-ordinate a number of different contractors.

You’ll directly report to our Operations Manager, and will be working with them to create and deliver the Countryside Annual Work Programme here at Hatfield. In addition to this, you’ll also be managing our agri-environment schemes (for example Countryside Stewardship/Higher Level Stewardship). As a Head of Department, you’ll also be working closely with our Visitor Experience Manager, Catering Manager and Retail Manager to help deliver our property vision.

You’ll play a key role in delivering the Land Outdoors and Nature work streams that ensure nature conservation is at the heart of our management. In addition to this, you’ll be responsible for ensuring all countryside Health & Safety, environmental and agricultural cross compliance obligations are met and relevant consents attained. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining excellent standards of presentation and property maintenance across the estate. Another key part of your role will be to engage our visitors and the local community with our work.
