We are looking for enthusiastic primitive skills tutor to join our team.

Do you find it rewarding to develop children’s confidence through experiential learning? 

The primary role of this seasonal post for April to November 2018 is to provide primitive skills learning as part of the Celtic Harmony education team. You will be passionate about nature-based learning and knowledgeable in a variety of primitive skills from friction fire lighting to flint knapping. A skilled facilitator, you will be able to adapt your style to a variety of children, young people and adult participants and be completely committed to the outdoors.

We are looking for a candidate with the ability to inspire children, young people and volunteers to take part in primitive skills and outdoor experiential learning as part of the school trips and the lifelong learning programme, in the safe and stimulating setting of Celtic Harmony Camp, the Prehistory settlement, near Hertford.

Main Duties:

Planning, Delivery and Follow Up School Trips

  • Leading weekday school day trips, as per the schools operations standard and industry standards, e.g. Learning Outside the Classroom quality badge standards, Archery GB.
  • Leading residential school trips including overnight supervision.
  • Leading community group visits, for example from scouts and guides or other community groups which take place on holidays.
  • Adhere to Health & Safety checks e.g. risk assessments
  • Preparation of contingency activities in case of wet weather
  • Assist in managing supply of materials for education days
  • Ensure all information and relevant forms are in place before visits
  • Gather feedback information through contact with teachers, children and parents
  • Visit schools to promote school visit to CHC
  • Assist in developing new educational activities
  • Work with the education team both staff and volunteers
  • Assist in café during events.
  • Assist in collating data (feedback) to evaluate programme

Lifelong Learning Programme

  • Plan of Work Experience / Volunteering programme
  • Risk Assessments and H&S checks for all activities.
  • Leading of outdoor activities as part of work experience / volunteering programme
  • Coordinate tasks with conservation plan to manage woodland, ponds and grasslands ; access plan to maintain/develop prehistoric houses and resources; animal husbandry; fencing and path maintenance
  • Assist with preparation of interpretative material and site signs
  • Site Preparation work for events
  • Collate feedback from participants of active work experience
  • Development, monitoring and evaluating of the active work experience programme.


  • Take part in team daily team debrief and staff meetings
  • Leading volunteer and work experience programmes
  • Complete in-house induction training

Visual Impact and Facilities Presentation

  • Maintenance and development of facilities
  • Creation of replica artefacts from Prehistory
  • Development of experimental archaeology to add value to the reconstructed Prehistory settlement.


  • Communication to schools and other stakeholders to promote benefits of programme.

Qualifications, experience & behaviours required for this role:

  • degree / college training in Experimental Archaeology or Outdoor Learning or similar / minimum 2 years experience based in nature based education.
  • Knowledge of Friction Fire Lighting, Flint Knapping, Tree ID, edible and medicinal plants, Knife Law, Cordage and/or other primitive skills.
  • Access to your own transport is essential due to the location of the site.
