First Ecology is the consulting subsidiary of the Somerset Wildlife Trust; a rapidly developing practice committed to upholding best practice standards whilst also achieving pragmatic ecological project outcomes. We have established a broad client base which extends across public, private and commercial sectors and provide technical advice and support on development, research, conservation and management schemes across the UK. We are now seeking a Senior Ecologist to lead on projects related to bats.

The role

The role involves management and delivery of bat related projects with an opportunity to significantly influence the future development of the business. There will be a requirement to liaise with clients, contractors and statutory agents; set and manage project budgets and timescales; manage a team of bat ecologists; undertake habitat and species surveys in accordance with best practice; and ensure the production of high-quality technical documents and reports.

The role requires a commercially aware, self-motived, hard-working, ambitious and organised individual seeking new challenges and continuously aiming to increase their knowledge and perfect their skills. Applicants should also have an approachable, polite, confident persona with a logical, reliable, positive and pragmatic attitude to work.

Qualifications (preferred)

  1. At least one degree in a relevant discipline
  2. Full UK driving licence with vehicle insured for business purposes.
  3. CSCS site visitor authorisation (or similar)
  4. A Natural England “Bats: survey or research licence (level 2)” (or above) holder with rabies vaccination.
  5. A Natural England registered consultant able to use the Bat Low Impact Class Licence
  6. A Natural Resources Wales personal survey licence for bats
  7. Great crested newt survey licence holder (class 2)
  8. Hazel dormouse Natural England survey licence holder (class 1)
  9. Full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management

Knowledge and experience

  1. At least three years’ experience in a private consultancy conducting bat assessments (using visual inspections, DNA analysis, infra-red and acoustic (manual and automated) bat detectors, and sonogram analysis) and preparing non-licensable method statements, bat low impact class licence applications and individual mitigation licence applications acting as the named ecologist.
  2. Competent in the survey of other protected species and experience of designing and implementing appropriate mitigation schemes.
  3. Excellent verbal and report writing skills and the ability to communicate appropriately with a diverse range of clients, regulators and colleagues.
  4. Knowledge of relevant wildlife policy and legislation, best practice survey and mitigation guidance, and advances in species research.
  5. Highly competent in the use of Word, Excel, Outlook, GIS and Kaleidoscope.
  6. Experience of team leading and co-ordination (i.e. setting objectives, prioritising tasks and work programmes, meeting budgetary targets and deadlines, and developing the technical skills of the bat ecologist team through the provision of peer based learning).
  7. Proven track record of successful project management.
  8. Ability to accommodate flexible/unsociable working hours.
