About us

The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to ensure a sufficient water supply and to reduce the risk of flooding, protecting and improving air, land and water quality. Join our Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology team and you’ll be improving and protecting fisheries in Kent, South London and East Sussex.

The role

Our busy Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology team is involved in a variety of work, including inputting into major capital schemes, establishing partnerships to deliver priority habitat creation, river habitat enhancements and incident response work. Joining them as Fishery Technical Officer, you’ll spend your time split between office and field work as you provide technical advice on a range of internal and external projects, programmes, consents and permits, including live fish movement permits. You’ll also deliver third party support to deliver fishery objectives and support sustainable fishery management. We’d like you to build solid working relationships with statutory and non-statutory partners, including rod licence paying customers, as you communicate policies and information to a wide variety of people. You will be required to work out of hours. This is a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on fisheries in an exciting, varied role.

About you

You’ll need a good knowledge of fisheries ecology and legislation, and ideally a degree in a relevant fisheries discipline, along with operational experience in freshwater fisheries management. Capable and confident, you have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, along with a natural talent for building excellent working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders. Preferably, you’ll have experience in enforcement, electric fishing as well as 4x4 and trailer towing experience. You’ll need to be willing to work out of hours and a full, clean driving licence is essential.

In return for your hard work, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits, as well as the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment. We’re committed to your continued professional development – you’ll have the opportunity to further develop your skills, expertise and career in the fast-paced, ever-evolving environment.
