Essex County Council is one of the largest, most reputable local authorities in the UK. Not only is it one of the largest, but it is one of the most dynamic, with a strong reputation for innovation and is a £2 billion organisation positively embracing change. By 2020, given Local Government reforms, we aim to be both self-financing and self-sufficient. It’s a significant change and a huge challenge. We’re committed to becoming a place where individuals, partners and communities feel proud to play their role and genuinely want to belong. We don’t just want to make Essex County Council the best it can be, but make Essex the best it can be.

The opportunity

We’re committed to ensuring our county remains a place where businesses and enterprises can flourish, our community feels supported, and our environment is cared for. Today, we’re working with the public, private and voluntary sector to build strong partnerships that will help us to reach our ambitious goals. As our Head of Sustainability and Resilience, it’ll be up to you to deliver resource sustainability and resilience programmes that meet all of our Waste and Environment requirements. With significant experience leading on issues that relate to the natural environment and an in-depth knowledge of environmental initiatives, you’ll help to drive the success of our outcomes. Whether you’re working on green and blue infrastructure, LLFA or renewable energy, you’ll be flexible in your approach and determined to make a difference. This is your chance to minimise our collective environmental impact and secure our bright future.

About you

In this role, you’ll get the opportunity to do something that really matters. As a strong communicator and determined leader, you’ll inspire those around you to work together to achieve our strategic objectives. You are forward thinking in your approach and have a flair for innovation. Passion for the environment and resilience are important; you’ll be the person responsible for influencing and promoting an aligned approach to our projects and initiatives. With a degree in a relevant subject and proven knowledge of environmental issues, you’ll oversee our approach to carbon and climate change, sustainability, resilience, and environment and resource policies.
