British Wildlife and Conservation Land Management are independent, subscription-based and long-established magazines which were acquired by NHBS, the natural history, ecology and conservation retailer and publisher, in March 2016. The magazines are growing and we are looking to expand our team.

We are now recruiting for a full-time editorial assistant to support the day-to-day administrative management of both magazines. This is a wonderful opportunity for a highly-motivated and well-organised individual with an interest in publishing and in nature conservation. The Editorial Assistant will be working with the Editor in our office in Totnes.


  • Provide administrative support to a small editorial team
  • Some image research and editorial tasks
  • Manage advertising bookings, sales and administration
  • Social media marketing (Twitter and Facebook)
  • Correspond regularly with authors and contributors
  • Prepare contributor contracts
  • Post contributor copies and manage contributor invoicing
  • Work closely with the Editor, the subscriptions team and the designer

Required Skills

The ideal candidate will be extremely well-organised and able to get the most out of collaborative software such as www.teamwork.com, Microsoft Office and other apps. You work well in a small team, while staying calm under pressure and working well to deadlines. You are an excellent communicator who can write with clarity and precision. Knowledge and understanding of current conservation topics is essential.

Above all, we value a common-sense approach, critical thinking and a willingness to learn new skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of British Wildlife (the magazine and the subject)
  • Some understanding of editorial processes and the publishing industry
  • Prior experience working in the conservation sector

Our offer to you

We are based in Totnes, South Devon, right next to the river Dart, halfway between Dartmoor and the coast. We have been selling natural history and science books since 1985, ecological survey equipment since 2009, and publishing magazines since 2016. The successful candidate will be joining a diverse and friendly workforce of 37 staff.

This position reports to the Senior Manager – Books and Publications.

This full-time permanent position is available immediately. Salary: 16,000 – 17,000 p.a. (depending on experience), based on a 37.5 hour week Mon-Fri, with the position attracting 28 days holiday p.a, including bank holidays, up to three paid days of conservation volunteering p.a., and a generous company pension.
