Five Rivers Environmental Contracting Ltd is a specialist environmental contracting company with a head office located in the Woodford valley, Wiltshire. Founded in 1994, we have over twenty years experience dedicated to nature conservation and habitat creation, restoration and management, particularly on environmentally sensitive and challenging sites.

What you'll be doing

You will be joining a staff of 25 covering all areas of the UK, with a direct focus within the ecology side of the business. Each of the team members has skills and specialties which allow for a vast range of knowledge and experience sharing.

We are looking to recruit an Aquatic Ecologist / Senior Aquatic Ecologist to carry out field work, macroinvertebrate laboratory analysis and reporting. For the right candidate there will be opportunities for business development and contract management. We carry out pre-and post aquatic monitoring for many of our restoration schemes, as well as providing data collection and consultancy services for a range of clients across the UK.

Who we're looking for

  • Experienced Aquatic Ecologist/ Senior Aquatic Ecologist
  • Supporting the technical delivery of aquatic ecology projects to the required best practice
  • Managing multiple projects, all to a high standard and within budget
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Compile risk assessments and method statements
  • Management of client interface and public perception in a professional manner

Requirements

  • Ability to interact professionally with clients and stakeholders
  • BSc in Ecology, Biology, Zoology or a related Environmental / Biological discipline
  • An in-depth knowledge of aquatic ecology, legislation, and survey techniques
  • Experience in conducting surveys and species identification (e.g. macrophytes, fisheries and macroinvertebrates)
  • High level of competence in macroinvertebrate analysis to TL5 species level
  • High level of competence in identification of aquatic macrophytes, ideally with a recognised accreditation
  • Data analysis and use of standard indices (Including RIVPACS/ RICT & LEAFPACS2)
  • Good IT skills (e.g. Microsoft, Excel)
  • Must be comfortable working in or around water
  • Aware of health and safety hazards and responsibilities in aquatic fieldwork
  • Reporting
  • CIEEM membership
  • A full clean UK driving licence

Desirable skills

  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • Fisheries experience
  • Experience of Water Quality sampling and reporting
  • RHS Accreditation
  • Valid CSCS card or equivalent

The package

The position has a starting salary of £23,000 - £32,000 dependent on experience, which will be reviewed on an annual basis. You will receive 20 days holiday, plus public bank holidays, with an additional day of leave accrued per year of service. The role will require periods of working away from home, for which you will receive a staying away allowance. You will have an annual training budget of £500, exclusive of any initial training agreed. For the right candidate, there will be career progression depending on aspirations and suitability.
