Where you’ll work

You will be based in our Flagship Integrated Waste Management Facility in Southwark, where you will form part of a critical management team responsible for delivering the municipal waste services. We are extremely passionate about the work we do. Our diverse team focuses on our customers and has the drive and energy needed to continue to deliver our success.

What you’ll do

As the Environmental Manager for the refuse and recycling collections service you will manage a team of collections operatives to deliver the highest standards of service and strive for continuous improvement. We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual who can be a role model for all staff and champion the company values and environmental goals.

You will manage the day to day operational activities, and lead the team to meet the contract objectives, delivering the best possible service to the local authority and the residents of the borough. You will be responsible for achieving the financial, operational and compliance targets for the contract and will represent the company with all stakeholders. Your duties will include:

  • Investigating and resolving missed collections, complaints and service failures
  • Reducing lost work hours due to sickness, accidents and injuries
  • Controlling vehicle and equipment usage and costs
  • Dealing with Fleet compliance including daily checks, management checks and gates checks
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws such as Road Transport Directive, Working time regulations and waste regulations
  • Managing Health and Safety for the service including recording accidents, incidents, near misses and safety concerns on RIVO and carrying out investigations
  • Use of computer based systems which include ECHO, CMS tracking and Google sheets
  • Assessing new and existing collection points and giving advice on the type of services required, taking into account accessibility, health and safety
  • Dealing with exceptional circumstances such as special events or adverse weather
  • Carrying out disciplinary and grievance procedures and ensuring that employees follow all processes correctly, in line with the company policy
  • Developing, maintaining and evolving good relations with all client officers and residents associations, by promoting partnership working
  • Engaging with the union on employee matters and procedural changes.

Skills & Qualifications required for the role

To enable you to carry out this role you will be a proven people manager and able to use your calm approach under pressure and your strong negotiation skills to resolve issues and deliver results. Your skills will include:

  • Managing the day to day operation
  • Strong people management and team leadership skills, experienced in managing operational staff
  • IOSH Managing Safely qualification
  • National/International CPC Holder (desirable)
  • HGV Licence (desirable)
  • Qualified Driver Assessor to assess driving capabilities of operatives (desirable)
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and best practice
  • Experience of training staff and delivering toolbox talks, e.g. manual handling
  • Experience of dealing with local and national union representatives
  • An understanding of cost control and financial management
