Amazing opportunity to drive forward marine and terrestrial conservation on Ascension Island

Ascension is a small volcanic island situated in the sub-tropical South Atlantic with a warm stable climate (26-34°C), excellent beaches and unique biodiversity. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to our future success and to be part of a welcoming and friendly island community.

We are looking for a Director of Conservation and Fisheries to join our team and ensure the delivery of high quality terrestrial and marine conservation and research on Ascension. You will be responsible for leading the department to achieve the objectives of the National Biodiversity Action Plan and Scientific roadmap towards an Ascension Marine Protected Area (MPA), as well as managing the commercial fishery in the Ascension Exclusive Economic Zone (EFZ). Much of the team’s work is externally funded and you will therefore also be responsible for delivering the requirements of these grant funded projects.

We are offering a salary of £42,500, on a two year accompanied status contract with the following benefits worth up to £20,000 (dependent upon single or accompanied status):

  • Food allowance (£3028 or £6054)
  • One mid-contract return journey to the country of recruitment/residence
  • Rent free housing, with electricity and water allowances
  • Fully expensed company car
  • Free primary medical and dental care
  • A bonus payment on successful completion of each 2 year contract.

To be successful, you will need:

  • A PhD or significant relevant experience in applied conservation or a fisheries related subject.
  • Proven experience / good understanding of management principles, techniques and regulatory procedures for fisheries and terrestrial and marine conservation.
  • Knowledge of relevant national and international legal requirements and working practices.
  • Experience of undertaking financial appraisals, modeling and forecasting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and developing partnerships and relationships with stakeholders from elected officials to NGOs.
  • Demonstrable leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent communications skills, including the ability to communicate technical issues to a wide range of audiences.
  • Proven experience of policy development, report writing and applying for funding within the public sector.
  • A high level of computer literacy.
