Sutton Community Farm (SCF) is a community-owned seven acre farm on the edges of south London. Our aim is to increase access to fresh, healthy and sustainably grown food and be a shared space for the community to cultivate skills. Since starting in 2010 we have engaged with a wide variety of organisations and have established a strong reputation in the community food sector. We are known
for being innovative, collaborative, transparent and ambitious. At the core of our enterprise is horticultural production with the majority of our produce going into a VegBox delivery service. The farm has a turnover of approximately £400,000 employs seven staff and works with a large community of volunteers, Members, visitors and friends. Please visit our website for more information.

The Growing Apprentice supports the Head of Production at the farm, developing skills and experience in local food production and maximising the productivity of the farm and helping secure its long term success.

The Growing Apprentice will also play a role in helping people in the community have a positive, meaningful and enjoyable experience. This includes volunteers, groups of children and other visitors to the farm. Scope of job

  • 3 days focused on growing, 1 day driving: delivering our veg bags to customers.
  • Conducting growing activities effectively including propagation, transplanting, weeding, watering, harvesting and other related duties.
  • Team work including good communication with other team members, especially Head of Production and existing Growing Apprentice.
  • Report to and work collaboratively with the Head of Production.
  • Helping to successfully implement the farm’s production plan.
  • Supporting and working with volunteers at the farm; helping to facilitate a range of volunteer groups;
  • We strongly recommend that the successful applicant studies a City & Guilds Level 2 Horticulture (or equivalent) alongside the apprenticeship.
  • Some weekend working may be required over the summer months.

Skills and Experience

The person should have:

  • Some food growing experience.
  • Some understanding of organic sustainable agriculture.
  • Commitment to the vision of the farm as a model for sustainable suburban agriculture.
  • Preferably a valid UK driving license.
