The role

We are looking for a permanent Senior Permitting Officer (SPO) to be based in the National Permitting Service in Warrington and a temporary SPO for 12 months in Nottingham. You will determine applications for Water Resources environmental permits that require complex technical assessments and ensuring appropriate standards are met in accordance with the Environment Agency policies and procedures. You will also provide high level advice; support and coaching to team members ensuring decisions are made on sound technical grounds in line with best practice.

You’ll be joining dynamic and successful permitting teams dealing with a range of permitting activities, providing a great opportunity to further your career. In Warrington you will join a team with a mix of experience and new starters, in Nottingham, an established team and both will require continued coaching, mentoring and technical advice. We determine applications submitted to the Environment Agency. The National Permitting Service helps deliver the Environment Agency’s permitting and regulatory responsibilities.

Experience/skills required 

Senior Permitting Officers are required to have experience in Environmental Management and a degree (or equivalent) in a Science or humanities subject. You’ll also be required to have experience of determining a range of complex permits and good customer relations skills with knowledge of Environment Agency functional duties and responsibilities to meet customer needs. Knowledge of the following is required:

  • A thorough knowledge of relevant legislation
  • Good communication and planning skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others both internally and externally
  • Environmental Knowledge
