Swift Ecology Ltd is a small, friendly and highly regarded ecological consultancy with an extremely good reputation and a loyal client base. We cover a large part of the English Midlands and surrounding areas, though we do work all over the UK, and have a vacancy for a new staff member; at this stage we are open-minded about the grade at which we appoint, the key thing being to find the person who best fits our company culture.

All staff are mainly home-based so you would need to have a fixed broadband connection and to be self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision. You will need to live, or be prepared to live, within or close to the eastern area of our region (South Warks/South Northants/North Oxon/North Bucks).  The position is flexible and may be permanent OR temporary depending on who applies.

  • Co-ordination of resources including in-house staff and sub-consultants
  • Advising clients and liaising with statutory/non statutory agencies
  • Preparation of fee proposals

  • A good degree in ecology or similar subject and working understanding of relevant UK & EU legislation, planning policies and licensing regulations
  • Excellent written English
  • Relevant experience depending on the grade of appointment
  • Full UK driver’s licence and use of your own vehicle (mileage expenses paid)
  • Willingness and availability to work at night
  • Personable and a team player

Highly desirable:

  • Experience of preliminary bat roost assessments across a range of UK bat roost types
  • Experience of bat activity surveys, bat detector use and sound analysis
  • A sound knowledge of UK flora and fauna
  • Experience of preliminary ecological appraisal and HSI assessment
  • Up to date knowledge of survey guidance for a range of UK protected species
  • Excellent communication skills, specifically written English and report writing skills

  • Experience of preparing EPSL applications
  • Knowledge/experience of writing EcIA chapters
  • NE Bat licence
  • NE GCN survey licence
  • Named ecologist on EPS development licences (bats and/or great crested newts)
  • Consultancy experience

We offer:

  • Good training opportunities, staff support and career development
  • A stimulating range of projects across our diverse client base including non-commercial work (e.g. research and conservation)
  • A role in a consultancy where good humour, integrity and ethics guide our working practices
  • Paid professional fees (CIEEM)
