Kier Strategic Highways are currently recruiting for an Ecologist to join the South West Design Services contract.

Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Senior Environment & Sustainability Manager and based in Bristol, the Ecologist will join the existing Environment Team, providing support to the Highways England DSC in the South West. 

The appointee will work closely with the Environment Team and other teams in the contract to assist the stewardship of ecological aspects of the South West network, thus contributing to the client’s achievement of their environmental strategic aims and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Completion of Environmental Assessments as part of scheme design, including the recommendations, and implementation of appropriate mitigation.
  • Undertake site visits and ecological surveys and produce reports as part of the assessment.
  • Complete biodiversity scheme design ready to handover to the client for construction.
  • Ecological surveys and contributions to studies, documents and tools that enhance operational management of the soft estate when instructed by the client.
  • Assistance with delivery of corporate and client, targets and reporting.
  • Consultation and liaison with statutory bodies, members of the public and local authorities.
  • Provide ecological advice, support and watching briefs to schemes under construction when instructed by the client.
  • Production of Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) if required.
  • Attendance at team, client meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Promote environmental principles and best practice throughout the contract.
  • Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace.
  • Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ecological related qualification.
  • Extensive experience in ecological surveys including Extended Phase 1 habitat surveys and protected species surveys.
  • Environmental Impact Assessment experience, preferably with use of the Highways England guidance document 'Design Manual for Roads & Bridges' (DMRB).
  • CIEEM membership.
  • Good knowledge of native flora and fauna species, and associated legislation.
  • Good report writing skills.
  • Experience in commissioning surveys and liaising with licensing bodies.
  • Previous experience with the HA BAP, UK BAP and local BAPs.
  • Possession of protected species licenses (bat and dormouse).
