Business Support Officer

Title: Business Support Officer
Area of Responsibility: Trademark Support, Chain of Custody Advice
Reports to: Business Development Manager
Contract type: Permanent, full-time (subject to successful completion of a probationary period)
Salary: from £19,000 per annum
Location: The majority of the post-holder’s employment will be based at FSC UK’s offices in Llanidloes. However, the role will involve occasional travel in the UK.
Hours: 35 hours per week
Working Days: Monday to Friday

Introduction to the role:

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) is an international organisation dedicated to ensuring that forests are managed in a responsible manner across the globe. FSC UK, based in Llanidloes, Powys, is one of the larger national offices. FSC UK is a registered charity responsible for promoting the FSC’s aims and objectives throughout the United Kingdom.

It is essential that the relationship we have with our licence holders, i.e. those companies that hold FSC certification or a licence to use our trademarks, is proactively managed and that we support those companies committed to the FSC system. In the global context, we also need to represent our UK stakeholders to ensure that FSC’s standards are appropriate and relevant.

We are seeking a new member of our team, who will help us engage, support and represent existing and potential FSC Licence Holders to maximise demand for FSC certified products and projects. A thorough induction to the role and full FSC training will be provided.

The Business Support Officer role is crucial to this work and requires a patient and polite individual who has the ability to understand and communicate FSC's requirements effectively. Attention to detail is paramount to this role, as is a proven ability to manage effective working relationships and indeed to enjoy doing so. You'll join a small but ambitious team of people who are dedicated to supporting our Licence Holders and who enjoy communicating FSC's message.

Main purpose and responsibilities of the role:

  • Respond to telephone and email enquiries as appropriate delivering advice on FSC Chain of Custody Certification, Trademark Advice and answering general questions about the FSC system from businesses in all parts of the forest products supply chain.
  • Lead TSP programme: act as main Trademark Service Provider (TSP), issuing and administering trademark licences (with support from other trained staff), approving artwork and verifying and recording product data.
  • Monitor trademark use by licence holders as appropriate.
  • Assist the Business Development Manager and support the work of the Business Team as required.
  • Communicate with colleagues at FSC International and the wider network
  • Facilitate Licence Holder communications
  • Support Business Development Manager in Licence Holder data management
  • Update CRM database to ensure records on Licence Holders are up-to-date
  • Support the Business Development Manager in delivering the programme of contacting Certificate Holders

Additional tasks and responsibilities:

  • Attend and represent FSC UK at trade shows, training courses and meetings/events as required
  • Provide support and input to Business Development Manager to ensure that business facing documentation and information is accurate and up-to-date
  • Input to the delivery of specific projects
  • Support the Business Advisor in administration of online training and delivering face-to-face training if required
  • Other duties as required

Person Specification:

Knowledge and Experience


  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel)
  • Experience of working within a customer facing/service environment
  • Experience in an administrative/clerical role
  • Degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience and training/development


  • An existing understanding of FSC
  • Experience of maintaining business/client accounts
  • Experience of using a CRM database such as Salesforce

Skills and Abilities


  • Attention to detail and ability to undertake and manage accurate recording and reporting of information
  • Effective time management and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload
  • An excellent phone manner with a proven ability to remain calm and objective when under pressure and communicate difficult messages effectively
  • A quick learner
  • Proven experience of communicating effectively and accurately both in spoken and written form
  • Ability to work on own initiative but happy to follow instruction and accept guidance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain good working relationships.
