Project Officer, River Kennet (ARK/Kennet Catchment Partnership)

Action for the River Kennet are recruiting for a project officer to deliver environmental improvement and habitat restoration projects in the lower Kennet catchment.

We are looking for a resourceful, self-motivated individual with an interest in the environment, particularly rivers. This is a community based role, which will involve working closely with partner organisations. Occasional weekend and evening working will be required.

You will be joining a small team of motivated individuals working to protect and improve the River Kennet and its tributaries. This post is funded by members of the Kennet Catchment Partnership.

Key tasks

  • Invasive species control – work with partners and contractors to oversee the eradication and control of Floating Pennywort in the Foudry Brook and River Kennet in the Reading area.
  • Water efficiency – provide information and practical advice about water efficiency, the water cycle and the importance of clean plentiful water for river health.
  • Project management – deliver practical habitat restoration projects in the lower catchment, working with contractors and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Liaison – liaise with other bodies (e.g. E.A., local councils, riparian owners, associations including Kennet Valley Fishery Association, Reading and District Angling Association and wildlife groups) to plan and deliver habitat restoration projects.
  • Facilitation – encourage participation in potential river and catchment improvement projects, providing guidance, information, practical help and funding advice where appropriate.
  • Fundraising – identify and secure funding for potential projects
  • Publicity – raise the profile of ARK in the lower catchment (Newbury downstream) and increase member recruitment in the area. Provide or organise representation at relevant public events (e.g. Reading Waterways Festival, local Fairs and Fetes).
  • Education – encourage local schools and groups to participate in ARK educational activities (e.g. Trout/eels in Schools, Yellow Fish Project, the Water Cycle), and provide an ARK presence at relevant local events (e.g. Englefield Schools Countryside Days).

Essential

  • A good knowledge of the local area
  • A pro-active ‘can do’ attitude
  • An interest in the outdoors, conservation and the riverine environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage a varied and evolving workload
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with partner organisations, staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to use basic MS Office software
  • A working knowledge of social media
  • A positive team player
  • Driving license and access to own vehicle

Desirable

  • A relevant Degree or equivalent qualification/experience
  • First aid qualification
  • Previous experience of working with volunteers and the wider community

What We Offer

This is a fixed term 24 month contract with flexible part time hours (24 hours per week (negotiable)). We offer a competitive annual salary and offer a contributory DC Pension scheme arrangement. The contract is subject to a 3 month probationary period.

An office space will be provided in the Reading area, although the successful candidate may work from home. Attendance at a monthly team meeting in Marlborough will be required.
