About the role:

LUC is a unique Planning, Design and Environmental Consultancy; owned and run by its employees we focus on high quality work, professional standards and employee well-being. With 120 consultants across a range of disciplines we take on some of the biggest sustainable development challenges facing the world today. We work hard and deliver interesting and challenging consultancy projects that delight our clients and make a real difference. As a consistently successful business we have the financial resources to invest and develop but because we are an SME your role can make a real difference.

The Ecology team at LUC is an experienced and supportive group of 13 consultants working on numerous development, energy, transport and strategic planning projects from Caithness to Kent. We aim to be the best in the industry at what we do and provide the time and resources for our consultants to learn, develop and share experiences. You can expect your ecology and consultancy skills to develop rapidly as well as passing on your knowledge and experience to junior staff and other team members. The team is actively engaged with developing and implementing the strategy for the ecology business and LUC as a whole.

As part of this strategy, and with established ecology teams in London, Glasgow and Bristol, we are now seeking an experienced and ambitious ecologist to join our growing multi-disciplinary teams in Manchester and Lancaster to work on existing projects and develop new ecology work across the North of England. As part of a broader strategy of business development you will work with the Director of Ecology and other senior managers to meet and develop work with existing clients as well as securing new ecology work on a number of identified opportunities.

If you are working for a small business that does not have the resources to support your ambition or a large consultancy where your voice doesn’t seem to be heard, then this could be the role for you.

More information about the range of projects delivered by our Ecology team can be found on our website www.landuse.co.uk.

LUC offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including generous training budget and opportunities to work across the UK.

About you:

You will have a degree and /or a post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline, and full membership of CIEEM is essential.

Your skills will include Phase 1 Habitat Survey of a range of habitats, with verifiable knowledge of higher plants. Demonstrable skills in at least one faunal taxonomic group (such as bats or other mammals, reptiles and amphibians, birds) would be highly advantageous, as would a NE licence for one or more species.

Your experience to date should include at least one role with a consultancy and within a wide range of development sectors, for example transport and housing.

Your experience should include the full range of report production, including EcIA and BREEAM, as well as a demonstrable track record of attracting and winning new work in the North of England.

You will need excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to write confidently and present reports internally and to clients, and strong organisational skills with the ability to manage tasks and time, using initiative.

The role requires competency in and familiarity with UK ecological issues more generally, including relevant planning policy and legislation.

You must have proven experience in project management, including survey design and survey team management, project financial management and the delivery of Ecological Impact Assessments, research reports and EPS licences.

The nature of this work means a full driving licence is required. In addition, suitable candidates will be physically fit and feel comfortable working in remote environments. Lone working and working out of usual working hours will also be required (in accordance with LUC’s H&S Policy).

We are happy to discuss options for flexible working in this role.
