Land, Outdoors & Nature Engagement Officer

Fixed Term f/t (37.5 hrs pw for 24 mo)

Ref: IRC57730

You'll be responsible for leading and positively engaging local communities in the Trust’s work to restore a beautiful, healthy natural environment in Purbeck. As part of the Land, Outdoors and Nature (LON) team, you'll drive to raise the profile of the positive work the Trust is doing, by listening to the needs of local people and developing opportunities for partnerships and collaborations that will make our conservation agenda relevant to everyone, not just our members. By understanding the needs of visitors to the Purbeck countryside, as well as the challenges for nature conservation, you'll bring user groups and site managers together - so that more people enjoy our land, and they do so in a way that supports nature rather than threatens it.

What it's like to work here

This 1000 year old royal castle stands at the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck. The area, famed for its beaches, castle and countryside, is home to some of the rarest species in the UK, including British reptiles. To become part of our friendly team, you'll need a love of the outdoors and an interest in active pursuits. A strong commercial focus and year-round opening means work at Purbeck Island requires energy and commitment, and the roles are fun and varied in a unique location.

What you'll be doing

Purbeck is one of the National Trust’s most outstanding countryside properties, and we have ambitious plans for the coming years to make it as rich in nature as we possibly can.

Your role will be to engage local communities and visitors in these plans, and find opportunities to make our work for nature relevant to everybody. In particular you'll develop links with the outdoor recreation sector and help develop a culture of responsible use that champions Purbeck’s unique wildlife.

You’ll also work closely with the Visitor Services teams at our two busiest sites – Studland Beach and Corfe Castle – to help make our work for nature more relevant to everybody who visits National Trust in Purbeck.

Who we're looking for

You'll need the following:

  • Knowledge of natural history and a willingness to understand our principles of Land, Outdoors and Nature
  • Knowledge of community engagement techniques and best practice, ideally with experience in using social media for community, environmental or educational projects
  • Extensive experience of planning and delivering both inspirational engagement activities and educational activities (the component activities of a wider programme) that help build or strengthen visitors’ connections with nature and the outdoors
  • An ability to demonstrate a positive and proactive approach to resolving conflicts, finding common ground and seeking positive outcomes through collaboration and partnership working
  • Excellent people skills with the ability to lead and inspire people of all abilities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of volunteer management best practice, including being able to lead and support volunteers to perform at their best
  • Some experience of project management and delivery
  • An ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills, working in a variety of media and with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Strong organisational skills, with ability to work on own initiative and to tight deadlines
  • Some experience of developing and managing partnerships and working with external stakeholders
