Our Energy, Cities and Climate Change Consulting team in London is a trusted adviser for city policy and action on climate change, low carbon energy and green cities globally; and a leading consultant in the planning, design and delivery of low carbon infrastructure in the UK. The team has a strong, shared commitment to a low carbon, sustainable and more resilient future. We are a multidisciplinary group of engineers, scientists, policymakers and planners working across scales from high level policy development through technical design, financial analysis, project delivery and operational optimisation. Over recent years we have gained international recognition for our role in high-profile projects in the field of cities and climate change, working with some of the leading thinkers and drivers of change, including the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, 100 Resilient Cities, innovative City Mayors, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, among many others.

In strengthening this commitment, and in response to our growing body of work in this space, we have a new opportunity for an experienced, intelligent and committed Senior Consultant to bring technical and strategic experience of low carbon, climate resilient and sustainable development in cities, and to support the development and management of urban projects.

Role

As a Senior Consultant (Cities and Climate Change) you will work as part of a peer group of technical specialists and project managers, supported by a strong and diverse team of junior consultants and senior leaders.

In this permanent post you are likely to be involved with projects such as:

  1. Analysis of evolving international and national climate policy to determine strategic and technical priorities for cities and urban actors
  2. Research and analysis of climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience action in cities to develop robust evidence bases to inform policy and decision making
  3. Modelling of energy, emissions and related data to inform climate change and sustainability strategies
  4. Preparing integrated sustainability and resilience frameworks, strategies and plans for cities and urban projects
  5. Low carbon and climate resilient masterplanning for urban projects
  6. Cost-benefit analysis and development of an investment case for low carbon and resilient projects.

Within these projects, your role will include:

  1. Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data and information
  2. Preparing compelling client- and public-facing reports
  3. Developing comprehensive strategies and policy recommendations
  4. Preparing and delivering presentations and/or training to client teams
  5. Supporting senior staff in the design and delivery of stakeholder workshops
  6. Managing multidisciplinary projects and project teams
  7. Contributing to new project proposals and bids
  8. Supporting the professional development of junior colleagues.

Requirements and skills

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  1. Bachelor’s or Master’s university degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Policy or related topics, with particular focus on climate change or sustainability. Other relevant qualifications will be considered but practical knowledge of sustainable development or climate change is essential.
  2. Experience and track record in at least two of: greenhouse gas measurement, climate adaptation and resilience planning, urban planning and policy, sustainability strategy, sustainable urban design, economic cost-benefit analysis.
  3. Typically 3-5 years’ experience working in a relevant field of consulting. Other relevant experience in a specialist advisory role will be considered (e.g. city government, international institution or NGO)
  4. Experience of data analysis and/or modelling (qualitative and/or quantitative) and a track record of producing insights and findings from analysis, i.e. the “so what?”.
  5. Experience with writing technical and non-technical reports
  6. Experience of designing and facilitating stakeholder workshops
  7. Project management experience, including project planning and budgeting.
  8. Holding or working towards chartership in a relevant professional institution
  9. Understanding of the principles of climate change and its relationship to the planning, design and operation of the built environment.
  10. Practical experience and understanding of solutions to addressing climate change and sustainbility

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  1. Research or project experience outside UK
  2. Knowledge of current UK and international climate policy and legislation
  3. Willingness to travel from time to time
  4. Knowledge and experience of city planning and policy processes
  5. Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
  6. Experience in a client-facing role
  7. Presentation and graphic design experience
